Woodstock update

Hi folks,

As many of you have already seen or heard, Sun Microsystems is officially stopping all new feature development on Woodstock components. The Woodstock release 4.2 is the last official version of Woodstock that Sun will release.

This decision wasn't easy and we know it won't be very popular. But in the current environment, every business has had to make some hard choices and this was one of those for Sun.

So what do you do if you've invested in Woodstock? First of all, Sun will continue to support its customers that have built on top of Woodstock 4.2. The Project Woodstock code is available on java.net (http://woodstock.dev.java.net) and community members can create new features or enhancements. Sun will assist with a community development effort behind Project Woodstock - the first step will be doing a transfer of information to help people get started (more to come on this soon).

In addition to this, We are researching solutions that will allow users currently invested in Woodstock to migrate their applications while leveraging the latest advances in web UI technology. We remain committed to improving the web developer experience, and plan to prove this with upcoming releases of JSF, GlassFish and NetBeans.

Thank you for your support and feel free to ask any questions. We'll do our best to answer (even if the answer is "we don't know yet").

Hi,

I'd like to know what do you have in mind for future versions of Visual Web Pack. Is it going to support other component libraries?

Thanks,
Felipe

I think at least Sun now owes us a fast update on what we are going to do with our production deployments based upon Woodstock.
Will there continue to be a visuall web framework for Netbeans? Do we need to switch to Icefaces, Quipukit, Infragistics or some other framework?

We cannot wait another 2 months, really!

Maybe we can give a look at RichFaces by RedHat...

yes we can and maybe we'll be forced to, but what about the visual approach to developing web inteface?
It is (was...) the real point of strength of Woodstock components and Netbeans I think

I totally agree with you. In fact now I am evaluating JBoss Developer.

I am converting my existing application to RichFaces, still using
NetBeans, as I am already used to that IDE and changing is not so
inviting, but I have not the visual approach anymore.

Please, Sun, at least let us use RichFaces visually on NetBeans in a
decent way! I tried IceFaces with NetBeans but I did not like how it
worked...
I like(d) NetBeans for the visual support to Woodstock. But that's history.

Yeap. RichFaces seems to be the best open source component library. It would be great if NetBeans VWP supports it, and soon...

Eclipse has visual editor puglin for it, I'm not sure if it is open source, bu at least is freeware.

I was glad to learn that there will be an event to state the
relationship between woodstock and netbeans.
