What happens if you use your old xorg.conf which sets the driver to "chips" with 4.6-beta? Also can you send me the /var/log/xorg.0.log from X -configure? I guess the chips driver fails to load for some reason, I'd like to see if it can be fixed for 4.6. -- Matthieu Herrb |

Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new To test the server, run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new' There are certainly many differences between the two files above but one that I noticed - that might be important - is that the probe results are different. The 4.6-beta log contains this line: (--) PCI:*(0@0:4:0) Chips and Technologies 65555 rev 198, Mem @ 0xfd000000/0 While the 4.4-release log contains this line: (--) PCI:*(0:4:0) Chips and Technologies F65555 HiQVPro rev 198, Mem @ 0xfd000000/24 The chips man page mentions three architectures: "Basic", "Wingine", and "HiQV" - with the ct65555 chipset falling into this last one. This is only cased by the fact that xserver 1.5 now uses the system pcidevs data to display the name of the PCI chips found by X, instead of having a duplicated database in X. The OpenBSD one is more terse to save room in the kernel. > >> I guess the chips driver fails to load for some reason, I'd like to see >> if it can be fixed for 4.6. >> > > Thanks very much for your help on this problem. > > -- > Mike Beasley > -- Matthieu Herrb |

I used cvs this morning (6/30/2009) to fetch the current source tree contents of src, ports, and xenocara from a secondary mirror. So I should have extremely fresh source bits now. I changed to /usr/xenocara/driver/xf86-video-chips and applied your patch there with no problems. I'm now prepared to rebuild everything: kernel, reboot with new kernel, userland, and then xenocara ... but this will take quite a long time on this old laptop (probably about 40-45 hours). So perhaps I'd better ask you an important question before starting that long process. What is the minimum amount of rebuilding that will allow for proper testing of your new patch? Should I really rebuild everything? - or just all of xenocara? - or only the chips driver all by itself? I know how to build everything or just xenocara from the detailed instructions in the OpenBSD FAQ - but I'm not quite sure how to correctly build and install only the patched chips driver (and I'm unsure if that would be sufficient for a valid test). -- Mike Beasley |

Rebuilding just the chips driver over a recent snapshot is enough: cd /usr/xenocara/driver/xf86-video-chips make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper obj make -f Makefile.bsd build -- Matthieu Herrb |

It's committed now, so snapshots in the near future should have this in. The build process should be something like this; cd /usr/xenocara/drivers/xf86-video-chips make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper obj make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper build you might need a "make bootstrap" in /usr/xenocara first (see /usr/xenocara/README). |

I didn't know about "make bootstrap" so I didn't do that but it seems to have worked anyway, except for some mode issues. Here is the email I've sent to Mr. Herrb. There is enough video memory onboard to support either 640x480 or 800x600 in 24-bit mode. (The native resolution of the LCD display is 800x600.) Looking back at the log from the older driver under the 4.4-release it looks like it uses "i2c" to learn more about the display capabilities. Also I noticed that now control-alt-backspace works just as it should. No more resetting the machine with a paperclip! -- Mike Beasley |
