I am not clear on this part I think since when I created Virtual

Thanks for this, very good stuff. However, I was a bit deceived when I downloaded the keynote from Keir today. For a 1.2Gb I expected it to be slightly longer session than just 22mins. Perhaps compressing these video files into a more standard format (e.g AVI/DivX/Xdiv, ogg, swf, etc, would be a great idea to save time and bandwidth for us all, including to Citrix.
Some one explained me in detail on community so I am forwarding same here
This guide will explicate in detail about the procedure for compiling
vanilla kernel from source and customize it according to your hardware
specifications and then compiling latest XEN from source and patching
it with Linux.
First install these packages:
I am not yet aware if there is already an "unstable" tree that will possibly translate into 4.0 at some point in the future, but I also seem to understand that before we go into 4.0, a 4.3 stable release will exist, so I suppose 4.0 is scheduled to late January.
PVGrub can't find config file for domU on logical volume

After hours of googling and not really finding a definitive solution to my
problem, I'm a little stuck and would really appreciate some help from
others.

I have a CentOS 5.4 x86-64 server running Xen 3.3 from the gitco repos as
dom0. On this I have created two logical volumes comprising 8GB for the
system disk (xvda) and 1.5GB for swap (xvdb). I ran mkfs.ext3 and mkswap
on these to create the required filesystems and then I mounted the 8GB
volume and copied a system image onto it. After creating the xen config
and starting it with pygrub the machine starts and runs without error - so
far, so good!

Now, If I shutdown the vm and change the config to use pvgrub and restart
I am stuck at a grub prompt. If I manually tell it where to find the
config file (using the exact same path as in the 'extra' line in the domu
config) it pvgrub starts and everything then runs as expected. Here is my
config:

--- snip ---
name = "pvgrubtestvm"
vcpus = 1
memory = 512
maxmem = 512

# pvgrub
kernel = "/usr/lib/xen/boot/pv-grub-x86_64.gz"
extra = "(hd0)/boot/grub/menu.lst"
#end pvgrub

dhcp = "dhcp"

disk = [ "phy:/dev/VolGroupVM/pvgrubtestvm,xvda1,w",
"phy:/dev/VolGroupVM/pvgrubtestvm-swap,xvda2,w" ]

vif = [
"mac=00:16:3e:00:00:09,ip=192.168.1.12,bridge=xenbr0,vifname=vifpvgrubtestvm"
]

on_poweroff = 'destroy'
on_reboot   = 'restart'
on_crash    = 'restart'
--- snip ---

Have I done something wrong? Is this an issue with pvgrub and logical
volumes - i.e. no partition table?

Many thanks,

Matt.

You're being to vague, asking for help but not providing any
additional info. Like the simple ones:
- do you use static IP or DHCP
- which networking setup you use, bridged or routing
- what does your bridge setup looks like (output of "brctl show")
- can dom0 ping the gateway
- can domU ping the gateway

etc, etc. ...

However my guess is your switch/router/gateway simply don't cache your
dom0's arp entry. Next time this happens, try using arping from dom0.
So if your dom0 interface is on eth0, and your gateway is 192.168.10.1
(just an example), you can try running (as root)

arping -b -I eth0 192.168.10.1
> But have you, or anyone else, used kexec on a running server yet?

Yes. That's how I was able to tell you how it behaves :D

> And
> how do I use it, without breaking anything?

On Ubuntu, it's part of kexec-tools. It comes with a nice man page. If
I remember correctly, the easy way to use it to modify some config
file so that when you run "init 6" (or similar) it would invoke kexec
(which is faster) instead of normal reboot. The "hard" way to use it
involves specifying manually which kernel image (plus initrd and
command line) that kexec would run.

> Not much. The domU's can't use iptables, at all.
>
> On a domU:
>
> -bash-3.2# iptables -L
> iptables v1.3.5: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables
> who? (do you need to insmod?)
> Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
>
> And the domU's kernel:
>
> -bash-3.2# uname -a
> Linux spare5.securehosting.co.za 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen #1 SMP Mon Aug
> 24 09:14:33 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
>
>
> The host node's kernel:
>
> root@usaxen02:[~]$ uname -a
> Linux usaxen02.securehosting.co.za 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen #1 SMP Mon
> Aug 24 09:14:33 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Here's some simple question:
- where is the kernel located? domU or dom0? Do you use pygrub?
- does domU have /lib/modules/2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen?

My guess is you use the kernel from dom0, but you don't have the
corresponding module directory on domU.
>> I know kexec can do something like
>> this for security patches, but I don't know much about kexec, and I
>> don't want to mess up a production server either.
>
> AFAIK current implementation of kexec works like a reboot, only
> without going through BIOS and bootloader. At least that's how it was
> implemented in Ubuntu

But have you, or anyone else, used kexec on a running server yet? And
how do I use it, without breaking anything?

>
>> So, has anyone done
>> something like this before? I need to load a new kernel for one of the
>> domU's iptables to work, but don't want to reboot the whole server and
>> cause downtime for the other domU's.
>
> You shouldn't need to that. What changes did you made on dom0? My
> setup works fine with iptables on domU in a mostly-default setup.
>

Not much. The domU's can't use iptables, at all.

On a domU:

-bash-3.2# iptables -L
iptables v1.3.5: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables
who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

And the domU's kernel:

-bash-3.2# uname -a
Linux spare5.securehosting.co.za 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen #1 SMP Mon Aug
24 09:14:33 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The host node's kernel:

root@usaxen02:[~]$ uname -a
Linux usaxen02.securehosting.co.za 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen #1 SMP Mon
Aug 24 09:14:33 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So, I thought of upgrading the kernel on both, and see if that helps at all?

How do you install Ubuntu?
Generally you need to configure it the same way you do on normal
system. Check things like /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hostname, /etc/hosts

Hi,
I have successfully installed Xen on a desktop, and now running two Ubuntu as guest os on Xen. However, it has some problems on hostNames. I have written a test java file, as follows

A.java

import java.net.InetAddress;

> Yes, the normal, non-xen kernels all work just fine.
>
> I can now see why you are recommending RHEL / Centros 5.4 (I'm assuming
> Fedora core would work too).

Not really :D
Fedora dom0 support ended a long time ago (F8, I think, which is now
EOL) and support for newer dom0 kernels in Fedora is still considered
experimental.

Two Linux distros that I know of with Xen dom0 support are RHEL/Centos
and Suse/Opensuse.

> In that case, what purpose does a GNU/Linux
> installation serve for dom0? Does a dom0 instance just need a xen kernel of
> some sort or does the dom0 instance act more like a "normal" GNU/Linux
> distribution installation?

Here's some oversimplification:

Xen, the hypervisor, manage CPU and memory allocation between all
running domains.

dom0 provides I/O access (disk, network, etc.) for itself and other
running domUs. It consists of kernel with xen dom0 support (xenified
or pv_ops), and the normal libraries and programs that comes with
standard installation. It behaves mostly like a normal installation,
with the main difference that it doesn't have access to all CPU and
memory. dom0 can be Linux, Opensolaris, or *BSD.

xen userland tools (e.g. xm) basically controls the hypervisor and
dom0, telling it stuff like "you need to provide this much resource to
this domain"

A functional Xen installation needs all three components.

>
> Since I'm so new to xen, could you also give me a recommended partition
> setup for a system that will run virtualized instances of both Windows XP
> and Debian GNU/Linux? Are there any other resources you would recommend I
> look into?

For normal uses, any partition setup would do just fine. If you want
high disk I/O performance though, you should use LVM setup, leaving
some unused space for domU storage.

--
> so I can stick with a Debian distribution (or derivatives).

I assume normal, non-xen kernel works fine?
The thing is, the state of kernels > 2.6.18 (including current
Debian/Ubuntu kernel) is not as well-tested as 2.6.18. AFAIK only Suse
officially supports dom0 kernel with 2.6.31. So my guess is you hit a
bug that exists in newer kernel.

The reason I suggest RHEL is because they actively maintain their
2.6.18 kernel, backporting drivers and bugfixes. So it'd be much
easier for you to start with that. Once you have it working, you can
easily use Redhat kernel on Debian if you want, or start compiling
your own kernel.
> Hi all,
>
> Is it possible to reload the dom0 / host node's kernel with a newer
> one, without rebooting the server?

Not that I know of

> I know kexec can do something like
> this for security patches, but I don't know much about kexec, and I
> don't want to mess up a production server either.

AFAIK current implementation of kexec works like a reboot, only
without going through BIOS and bootloader. At least that's how it was
implemented in Ubuntu

> So, has anyone done
> something like this before? I need to load a new kernel for one of the
> domU's iptables to work, but don't want to reboot the whole server and
> cause downtime for the other domU's.

You shouldn't need to that. What changes did you made on dom0? My
setup works fine with iptables on domU in a mostly-default setup.

  Here's a writeup about our Drupal side of things:
http://drupal.org/node/649860

  We are anticipating high traffic during the event tomorrow, so we have replicated the
site over to Amazon EC2/S3/RDS. We have one central RDS (EC2/Xen cloud system running
MySQL) that runs the database, and we can dynamically add/remove nodes from teh RDS
cluster via Amazon's AWS control panel.

  We also have one EC2 machine running and NFS server that stores and shares the common
dynamic site content (static site content like the Drupal installation lives on the actual
EC2 node to reduce NFS traffic).

  We also have any number of identical EC2 Ubuntu nodes installed with Apache and the
Drupal site. These actually process the HTTP requests from the client users, and talk to
the NFS and RDS servers.

  The original Xen machine switches to being a load-balancing redirector when the site
makes the cutover to the cloud-based implementation, so I don't have to wait for DNS
changes to propagate.

  Xen and Xen-based-EC2 have been instrumental in making this happen. Virtualization is
awesome.

  Yes, I'm also blatantly self-promoting my team. Come join me and maybe share in part of
the $40,000 prize, even if you aren't the one who spots a balloon. Even if you can't join,
I request you send a note to your friends/twitter/facebook about it. That's the actual
goal of DARPA's game -- social network exploration.
> >> >> 2008 R2.
> >> >
> >> > First of all you might have hard time getting 2008R2 working on Xen
> >> 3.2.
> >> > 2008R2 didn't exist when 3.2 was released.
> >> >
> >> > Xen has has a lot of fixes and improvements after version 3.2.
> >
> > Also what does "xm info" say about the capabilities/caps?
>
> Hi Pasi and Fajar, and thanks for trying to help out :-)
>
> Here is the requested information:
>
> # xm info | grep caps
> hw_caps                :
> bfebfbff:28100800:00000000:00000140:009ce3bd:00000000:00000001
> xen_caps               : xen-3.0-x86_64 xen-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_32
> hvm-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_64
>

so the caps says you _do_ have hvm (vmx) support.

> There is no qemu-dm process after having run "xm create" (which completes
> successfully):
>

Do you even have qemu-dm binary?

> # ps -ef | grep qemu
> root      3447  2804  0 14:52 pts/0    00:00:00 grep qemu
>
> The last thing in "xend.log" is my domU being "unpaused". And xm list
> shows it:
>

So no errors in the log?

You can use "xm list -l" to dump the configuration in SXP format; then you should be able to use "xm new" or "xm create" with the "-F" option to load an SXP-based config file. See the "xm" man page for more info - that's where I dug up this.
> Hi all,
>
> I use FluidVM on some of our VPS host nodes, and the management server
> has crashed, so now I need to recover the running VM's, somehow.
> FluidVM deploys the domU's on the hostnode dynamically from a
> database, i.e. there's no /etc/xen/vps1 (for example) config files.
> The domU's are still running on the servers, and I now want to create
> config files for them, while they're running.
>
> How would I be able todo this?
>
> For example, here's a list of running VM's from one of the servers:
>
> root@usaxen02:[~]$ xm list
> Name                                      ID Mem(MiB) VCPUs State   Time(s)
> AndriesBurger_39_cronos          90      255     1 -b----     42.4
> Bruce_18_carmen                     60      255     1 r----- 3528327.5
> Domain-0                                  0     3433     4 r----- 1116681.7
> Rudi_14_mars                           40     3007     2 -b---- 953036.3
> Rudi_44_vps2                           93      255     1 -b----     22.9
>
>
> Is there any way to create a config file,
> /etc/xen/AndriesBurger_39_cronos, from the running domU
> AndriesBurger_39_cronos ?
