Xfce 4.6.1 released

Hi all,

The first bugfix-release of xfce 4.6 has been released.

Thanks to all the people who have been using xfce 4.6 and took the
time and effort to submit bugreports for stuff that wasn't quite
working the way it is supposed to. We have been able to fix several
issues during the past few weeks.

For a full list of changes, look here[0].

Also, thanks to all the translators, several translations have been
improved and completed since the release of 4.6.0.

Xfce 4.6.0 Released!!!

After more than two years of development, Xfce 4.6.0 has just been released.

Xfce 4.6 features a new configuration backend, a new settings manager,
a brand new session manager and sound mixer as well as several huge
improvements of its core components. A list of all the changes since
the last release candidate can be found on this page.

Xfce 4.6 Beta 2 released

Hi everyone,

The second Beta was delayed for 2 weeks, but it was worth it.
Every feature we made a freeze-exception for has made it into this release.
This means a lot of bugs have been fixed this time aswell:

- The keyboard-shortcuts for xfwm4 can be configured again. (now with
conflict handling)
- Session-management has been improved, apps will now be automatically
restarted if they die unexpected.
- It is now possible to set the desktop wallpaper from the thunar
right-click menu.

This are just a few changes everybody is likely to notice, a complete
list of changes can be found at this location[0].

The translators have done a great job on translating Xfce in their
native language.
We will probably see Xfce 4.6 be translated in more languages then
ever before thanks to their hard work.

Xfce 4.6 BETA1 ('Fuzzy') Released

Hello everybody,

We are one month since the release of Xfce 4.6 ALPHA. And now it's time to
release the first BETA, codename 'Fuzzy'.

A *lot* of bugs have been fixed in this release, a few highlights:
- Xfwm4 can now detect if a program is unresponsive. It will show a
dialog to let the user kill it.
- Xfce4-session will start up significantly faster by using parallel startup..
- It is possible to configure the keyboard-layout
- Toggling event-sounds with libcanberra + gtk 2.14 is now possible
(meaning: you can turn them off).

And lets not forget the translations, thanks to them Xfce 4.6.0 will
be available to a lot of people in their native language.

Ofcourse, this is still a beta. This means that not everything is
working perfectly now.

Xfce 4.6 ALPHA ('Pinkie') Released!!!

Hello everybody,

After about 18 months of development, we are pleased to announce the release
of Xfce 4.6 ALPHA, codename 'Pinkie'.

Xfce 4.6 is going to be the next major release of the Xfce desktop
environment. The previous release was 4.4 with the last bugfix release
being 4.4.2 released in December 2007.

What's new?
===========

Xfce 4.6 comes with a lot of new components, some of them replacing old
code and some of them being completely new. A preliminary ChangeLog for

Excerpt of new features:

* While Xfce 4.4 shipped a centralized settings storage system with
dynamically loaded plugins, 4.6 features a D-Bus based settings
daemon (xfconfd). All settings dialogs are just standalone
applications now which makes the whole platform more flexible. You
can now much easier write a settings dialog and remove/add
components from/to Xfce.

* In addition to xfconf and the settings dialogs being ported to
xfconf, there will also be tools addressed to users who would you
like to have direct access to the settings. There is a shell
application xfconf-query which allows to list/get/set properties
and a graphical settings editor is in development and will most
likely be part of 4.6 as well.

* We have tried to make the keyboard shortcuts settings more
transparent to the user. Shortcut themes have been completely
dropped and there are dialogs now which help resolving conflicting
shortcuts between xfce4-settings (command shortcuts) and xfwm4
(window manager shortcuts).

* The settings dialogs will be available as standalone apps but they
will also support embedding into the main Xfce settings dialog
which helps making the desktop less intrusive.

* In 4.4 xfdesktop used a pseudo-fd.o-compliant menu system. In 4.6
this is replaced by libxfce4menu which aims at implementing the
fd.o menu spec. It's still in development but covers enough of the
specification already to replace the old code.

* The volume control (xfce4-mixer) has been replaced with a
completely new mixer based on GStreamer 0.10. This removes the need
to maintain support code for different sound architectures and also
provides some new features.

Base dependencies
=================

Xfce 4.6 is going to depend on GTK+ 2.10 and GLib 2.12. There are some
optional features available with more recent versions like with the
tooltips API of GTK+ 2.12. Some of the (optional or not optional)
dependencies introduced by core components include:

* gstreamer-plugins-base 0.10
* libnotify >= 0.4.0
* hal-storage >= 0.5.7
* libstartup-notification-1.0 >= 0.5
* libglade-2.0 >= 2.0.0
* dbus-glib-1 >= 0.72

* libwnck-1.0 >= 2.12
* cairo >= 1.0.0
* xrandr >= 1.1.0

Known Issues
============

As this is a development-release, we do not claim it is perfect. Here
is a list of issues we have already identified:

* Some Xfce Menu items are unsorted.
* xfdesktop and xfce4-menu-plugin can crash when installing new
.desktop files or icons.
* xfwm4 does not use the keyboard shortcuts configured in the settings dialog.
* xfce4-settings-editor cannot be used to edit settings.
It does show some of them though.
* Due to a bug in xfce4-settings-editor using the wrong API, it depends
on glib 2.14 instead of 2.12.
* Workspaces settings dialog is missing the margins settings.
* Workspaces settings dialog cannot set workspace names.
* Icons for app launchers are not shown properly on the desktop.
* "Help" buttons in settings dialogs aren't hooked up yet.

Thunar 0.9.0 and libexo 0.3.4 releases

I just released Thunar 0.9.0 and exo 0.3.4 as part of the upcoming
Xfce 4.4.2, which will be released tomorrow. The separate tarballs are
provided for users of Xfce 4.2.x refusing to upgrade to Xfce 4.4.x,
and users of other desktop environments. This is a bugfix release that
fixes several bugs found since the 0.8.0 release.

You will need at least libxfce4util 4.2.2, GTK+ 2.6.4, shared-mime-info
0.15 and desktop-file-utils 0.10 to build and run Thunar. In addition
Gamin or FAM are highly recommended to enable file system monitoring in
Thunar. For HAL support on Linux, the libhal-storage-devel package is
required (0.5.0 or above). Furthermore if you want to use the trash
panel applet, you will need the Xfce Panel 4.4.x or above and D-Bus
0.34 or above. The README file contains a complete list of dependencies
and optional packages.

Yes absolutely. The following modules have not been branched yet and
therefore have no update for Xfce 4.4.1:

- xfce4-dev-tools
- Thunar
- libexo
- Terminal

Mousepad is also shipping unchanged.

Xfce 4.4.0, which will be released in a few hours. The separate tarballs

ANN: Xfce4-datetime-plugin 0.4.1 released

Hi happy Xfce-ers,

I've just released the 0.4.1 version of the datetime plugin. This release will
fix a couple compiler warnings, possible build problems, memory leaks,
a crash when you remove the plugin from the panel and some other issues.

We are pleased to announce that the second and hopefully last release
candidate of the upcoming Xfce 4.4 desktop is now available for
download. This release will focus primarily on bug fixes and optimizations.

Thunar 0.5.0 and libexo 0.3.1.12 rc2 releases

Hello everybody,

I just released Thunar-0.5.0rc2 and libexo-0.3.1.12rc2 as part of
Xfce 4.4RC2, which will be released in a few hours. The separate
tarballs are provided for users of Xfce 4.2.x that don't want to upgrade
yet, and users of other desktop environments. It is planned to be the
last release candidate before the final release, so please help with
testing so we can locate and elimate the leftover bugs for the final
release.

You will need atleast libxfce4util 4.2.2, GTK+ 2.6.4, shared-mime-info
0.15 and desktop-file-utils 0.10 to build and run Thunar. In addition
Gamin or FAM are highly recommended to enable file system monitoring in
Thunar. For HAL support on Linux, the libhal-storage-devel package is
required (0.5.0 or above). Furthermore if you want to use the trash
panel applet, you will need the Xfce Panel 4.4BETA1 or above and D-Bus
0.34 or above. The README file contains a complete list of dependencies
and optional packages.

We are pleased to announce that the first release candidate of the
upcoming Xfce 4.4 desktop is now available for download. A lot of bugs

[Thunar-dev] Thunar 0.4.0 and libexo 0.3.1.10 rc1 releases

I just released Thunar-0.4.0rc1 and libexo-0.3.1.10rc1 as part of
Xfce 4.4RC1, which will be released in a few hours. The separate

give a chance to the svn xfce. It is pretty good but not "stable as a
rock". In a while there should be a public beta/release candidate, so keep
your ear near.
