The tab interface in the picture is great, better than Nautilus's.

I've been reading all the discussions about "Tabs in Thunar" and related things and here what I thought:
1. We can clearly see that there really are many people who uses Thunar and wants it to have tabs. I'm not going to ground this point of view right now (for the 1001st time :) ), I can only say, that I perfectly understand this point of view (I've got the same, in fact).

2. We can also clearly see that Thunar has always been (and it must be) a light, fast and simple to use file manager. I think nobody will object?

3. There are also many people who thinks the 2 things mentioned above are incompatible ("...the tabbed interface cannot be simple..."). I can perfectly understand those people too.

4. So what a solution can be in this case? I guess, the answer is simple: make this feature OPTIONAL. I would even say "strongly optional" in some sense. :)

5. Thinking of all said above, I decided that the only thing I can do right now is dream up a little. I mean I decided to imagine "Thunar with tabs". Of course, I am a very bad artist (in fact, I am a terrible artist or even not an artist at all :) ), but still I know what GIMP is ;)

Folder thumbnailers

Hello, I have some questions:
Does thunar support folder thumbnailers?
Nautilus does support this and there is already a thumbnailer for folders:
cover-thumbnailer

I want to make a folder thumbnailer for thunar to produce thumbnails like in the screenshots:

I tried to use inode@directory (used by cover-thumbnailer for nautilus) but it doesn't work:

Actions extensions in File Manager

Hi guys,

I'm the Nautilus-Actions (N-A) maintainer.
N-A is an extension to Nautilus, the Gnome file manager,
which allows (advanced) users to add their own actions
in the context menu.

This is so very similar to Konqueror Service Menus and
thunar-actions-plugin.

While N-A actions used to be stored in GConf system, which
is the general Gnome system for configuration storage, I'm
currently working on making use of desktop entry files.

I know Konqueror Service Menus makes use of desktop files,
as Thunar does in Xfce.

Do you think it would be possible, and profitable for our
users, to be able to share actions between Xfce-KDE-Gnome ?
(this would probably imply having common path, common
interpretation of desktop file keys, and so on...)

If this list is not the good one, could you be kind enough
to forward this message to the ad-hoc list ?

displaying meta-information about pdf documents

I find the option under View => Side Pane => Shortcuts and then the
drag'n drop works perfect. Now everything is fine :). The topic is solved.

I'm new to xubuntu and I quite like it of it simplicity and fast desktop
environment. I prefer thunar over nautilus because it's very fast and
has just the options which I want but there is some options which I'm
missing: I can't create bookmarks to my folders. I read through the
documentation on the thunar-project page but didn't find anything about
it. Thanks for your help!

Well, the "casual contributor" of course.

The people who develop Thunar don't get paid either. I was merely
doing *exactly* what you just asked: I think it should be done
differently, so I was asking you why you did what you did, and
advising you to do it another way.

I'm of course not suggesting you *have* to do anything. I'm just
suggesting that what you did -- while cool and useful -- probably
isn't suitable for inclusion in Thunar as it is. It's up to you
whether you want to do extra work to make it suitable. If your goal
is to get your patch into mainline Thunar, then you'll have to do some
more work. If your goal is just to write something useful to you and
toss it out there, that's fine too. But you didn't at all make your
goal clear from your initial email.

Please don't be so defensive. You did something of value, certainly.
It's up to you whether or not you want to put more work into it to
increase its value.

Dear thunar developers, I did something on expense of my free time and published it. If you like it - use it. If not - ignore it. If you want thing differently - ask me or advice me. That's it. No complains. I do not get paid for writing thunar code.

Why ".DirThumb"? Is there a relevant standard for this? If there is,
why aren't you using it? If not, I'd prefer to see this standardized
(and with a better naming scheme). This also makes the associated
icon not themable.

Upon icon theme change thunar purges all icons from icon cache (at least it should) so it's not a problem

happen against git master, which likely has diverged a lot since 1.0.x
due to the new VFS backend.

Directory thumbnails implemented

I've recently added directory thumbnails support for Thunar file manager.

You select a file to be shown on its directory icon and ... that's it. Any file that has thumbnail will do. Like images, video, PDF documents and more.

Problem mounting external usb hard-disk

Hi, I don't know why thunar takes more time to mount my external hd
and show the root directory contents than dolphin.

It takes 1minute and 11 seconds, and dolphin is near instant. Seems
that thunar examines whole subdirectories, the hd led shows activity
until thunar shows contents and usb-storage process takes a lot of cpu
too.

Any idea?

Making thunar mc-like

Hi all,
I love xfce, but i feel that it's missing out on a high productivity
two-panel layout file manager, i.e. a Norton Commander clone,
in fact there doesn't seem to be an actively developed *nix graphical
NC-like file manager at all.
So, as I'm way too lazy to make a complete file manager myself, I'd
like to bastardize thunar to be Midnight Commander-like, with two
equal panels, funky f-key actions and the god-damned "show directory
sizes" command.

My question now is whether I can pull this off with a plugin or
whether I need to branch the code (which seems stupid, because most of
the stuff i want is just a layout-change).

"Open Location..." dialogue autocompletion suggestion

Hey all, I've been a lurker here for a while so first I'd just like to 
thank everyone for their work on this great app. Second, I'd like to 
bitch and moan about it ;-D

Actually, my gripe is pretty small. In the Open Location... dialogue, 
autocompletion works just fine. My issue is that Thunar jumps as far in 
the path as it can assume is correct as the user is typing. This 
behavior is fine if the user knows just where and when Thunar will 
autocomplete the path, but many times (most for me) this causes 
inconvenient behavior as I type something like "/usr/bin/..." on 
autopilot, causing Thunar to leave me with "/usr/bin/in" in the location 
field. I figure it would be an easy fix to simply highlight the 
autocompleted text automatically, so that without some kind of 
confirmation from the user (say, a tab press), continued typing in the 
field will override the autocompletion. This would offer more 
predictable behavior, IMO.

I'd be happy to contribute this fix, if everyone is busy. Thanks again 
for all your work.

Hi Jelle,

I've worked a lot on Nautilus-Actions since this summer. Among
other things, the data model has been extended to be able to
define a hirarchy of actions. Of course, conditions have also
been extended, but this is a rather endless work ;-)

From the architecture point of view, I have defined what I've
called a NAIIOProvider interface, which let me address several
distinct I/O storage sources. This interface is thought to be
implemented by dynamically loadable libraries, one for each
I/O storage source. For now, only have a GConf provider...

I also have written some pages about my data model, and how I
am currently working on fds implementation. These pages are

Patch for thunar drag and drop crash

Here's a little patch to prevent thunar from crashing when dragging
unhandled formats (text, panel plugins, windows from the taskswitcher
applet etc) over its fileview.
For those interested: The call to gtk_drag_get_data ultimately results
in a call to XConvertSelection which generates a BadAtom error.

Steps to reproduce:
* select text somewhere (e.g. in Mousepad)
* drag selected text over the fileview in thunar
* crash

reproducible: always

versions affected:
* trunk
* Xubuntu 9.10
(have not bothered going further back)

Too many hidden files

How do I tell Thunar that editor backup files (trailing tilde) are not
to be hidden, without showing the real hidden files?

Problem with many home directories

Hi,

I have a problem with Thunar. I have about 13000 users in /home/. If any user
tries to go from /home/user1/test to /home/user1/, Thunar lags for about 1
minute, sometimes even longer.
I always have about 40 to 50 users logged in. The machine has 16GB of RAM and
8 2.3GHz CPUs, so it should be powerful enough to handle this.
Any idea why this lag occurs?

Is any doc how to compile and configure Thunar now? Because now I have some problems...
I'm using Slackware and I haven't policykit configured; but I have gvfs packages with all modules enabled (with all dependencies, I suppose), but when I'm building thunar, and search what libs it depends on - no gvfs libs are in list. and thunar still doesn't show any removable device. And no error message or something like that was shown. Am I missing anything? Are thunar-vfs and thunar-volman packages need now?

Like you already said, both the master branches compile fine, so
nothing is wrong. The migration-to-gio is already merged in master (+
a whole bunch of other fixes after that). The problem is no removable
devices, which requires the gvfs package + sufficient permissions in
policykit.

bad luck with any version Thunar compiling

I'm trying to get any working copy of Thunar file manager.
I have an exo package from git...
Thunar 1.0.1 - requires exo-0.3, while exo from git provides exo-1 version (info from pkgconfig)
Even if patch build scripts, Thunar build failed with message like this (translated by me)

thunar-dialogs.c: In function ‘thunar_dialogs_show_about’:
thunar-dialogs.c:217: error: ‘exo_url_about_dialog_hook’ isn't declared (first using in this function)

Git version of Thunar builds good, but it didn't see any removable device.

Thunar migration-to-gio branch faile to build with the same words as 1.0.1 version
(getting sources with these commands
git clone git://git.xfce.org/xfce/thunar thunar
cd thunar
git checkout -b migration-to-gio origin/migration-to-gio)

Can anybody help me resolve it?

That's ok, I wasn't sure if the email was valid. I did run that, it was
in the output file. Attached are the files you asked for, there were two
psd-thumbnailer files, the large one in /usr/local/bin and the small one
in /usr/local/libexec, I attached both. Let me know if you need anything
else.

/usr/libexec/thunar-vfs-update-thumbnailers-cache-1

Mmm, good idea. It looks weird when you have two widgets in a GtkHBox
that have different natural heights.

The mockup you posted above is not really usable. A bit more spacing
and text helps users in finding a certain operation again later. I've
(more or less) decided to implement this mockup now:

It requires less vertical space and we can probably display 5 jobs
without scrollbars on a netbook screen. I'd say that's pretty good.

Ok, a version with this implemened is now available in the
'shared-progress-dialog' branch. Please give it a try.

Can anyone please run Thunar 1.0.x and check if their X CPU usage goes
up to ~50% with ThunarVFS? It might be that my GIO job implementations
emit more 'percent's signals and thus, causes a higher CPU usage.
