keybindings to xfce Volume control module

Hi,

I have a wireless keyboard that has a row of special
keys, which are intend to be used for volume control.

It would therefore be nice if the Volume control
module in the panel would allow calls similar to
this:

xfce4-mixer -vol
xfce4-mixer +vol

etc. to allow reducing/increasing the volume with a
certain step. I could then bind the Volume control
keys on the keyboard to XF86AudioLowerVolume and
XF86AudioRaiseVolume. How could XF86AudioMute be
implemented?

It's impossible for us to tell without additional information.

Can you try this:

1) Open an X terminal
2) From there, launch "gdb xfce4-panel"
3) from the gdb prompt (gdb) type "run"
4) once the panel has died, type "bt" and post the results on this list.

I have built the xfce4.2.2 system with the installer. All went
very well. When I reboot and login, the panel starts and then
is gone. I get the following:

ANNOUNCE: Verve 0.1.0 - A panel command line plugin

Hi all,

if you've ever wanted to have command auto-completion in the
command line plugin, you'll probably like to hear that this is what
you can get now. I've written a new command line plugin implementation
for the panel (new framework, so SVN-only) which provides you with
exactly this:

* auto-completion of commands in $PATH (TAB key)
* command history browsing just like in minicmd (UP/DOWN arrows)
* URL opening in your favourite browser (requires exo-open and is
not yet optional; thus, you need a very recent checkout of
libexo from SVN)
* opening of your favourite eMail program with the compose window
opened, once you execute an eMail address in Verve

And there's still more to come.

I've been added to the Xfce Goodies project on BerliOS and
uploaded the version 0.1.0 tarball there. You can get it from here:

Please file bug reports, feature requests and the like on BerliOS
or xfce-goodies-dev@.... Thanks!

BTW, I still need translators for it, but I'm not sure where to

1) Please don't use this list (xfce-dev), use xfce4-dev instead
2) This is SVN code, meaning it's in development, so expect things to
break or not build occasionally.
3) This is a known issue. Please help Danny to fix it or be patient and
wait for someone else to do it.

Make Error Libexo rev 17550

I simply downloaded the source from svn and did...

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/
make

And i get that error....

I'm using the latest Xfce 4.4 svn revision......

Did someone maybe get this error too?

I looked into the Tk manpages, but I couldn't find anything specific.
I guess Tk is too old-skool to support window hints.

I suggest to look at Gtk2-Perl. it is more modern and the docs suggest
that you can so what you want.

or howto on setting window hints (sticky,no borders, ignored in the
window list..etc) in perl/tk. Also, is there a way to do it in tcl/tk
as well? Do I need certain versions of perl or tcl or the tk libs?

Just checked on xsetbg (or xloadimage) and it does not keep the root
pixmap around on exit. Unfortunately this means it will not work to set
the background for xffm-deskview. Better use "fvwm-root -r".

If a window is not sticky it will only show up on 1 workspace. This is,
apparently, also true for desktop windows.

And this has indeed nothing to do with xffm-deskview...

understand how XFCE can show always the same desktop also when workspace is
switched: working around a XFCE "fork" I have touched some piece of code, and I
can't return to the original situation (maintaining other changing...).

The main window of desktop have type == "_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP", but when
I switch workspace the window manager hide all windows *included* the desktop
window! I recognize I've do some changes to the STICKY properties of windows (in
short: I've removed it): the problem can be due this bad manipulation? Or: have
you other suggestions about potential causes of the problem?

xffm-deskview and xffm-desktop are synonymous (I get mixed up with these
two names so I use them both). Xffm creates symlinks but only four
executables (not counting the apps dir). These are xffm-run,

The behaviour is to avoid screwiness caused by programs which leave a
bogus Pixmap on exit. As such, xffm-deskview will assume the Pixmap it
finds and startup is bogus, whether it is or not, and use a solid
background. After startup it will accept any Pixmap set by an external
program which is referenced by the X property _XSETROOT_ID. Apparently
xsetbg does not set this property. I'll look into what it actually does
and see if I can add support for 4.3.3 release.

When you tick and untick the "show image" button at desktop settings,
xffm-deskview notices that the Pixmap has changed and updates
accordingly (here the X property _XSETROOT_ID is used).

I'm not sure whether the desktop setting plugin can be invoked on a
command line basis. If it can (probably not) then you could put the
command into the environment variable DESKTOP_BG_COMMAND from the
filemanager setting plugin.

Anyways, I'll let you know if it is possible (i.e., not too difficult)
to enable support for xsetbg later today...

No need to use bugzilla for this one. It has already been fixed in the
4.3.3.0 branch. I just sync'd with HEAD so if you do a svn update you
should no longer see those ghost icons.

was hoping someone could clear up a few queries about xffm-deskview (and
most recent kid on the block, xffm-desktop) ... i read from the dev-blog
that there was some screwiness with setting the background with
xffm-deskview. apparently it will grab it only when it has been set
*after* deskview starts. i've tried this with xsetbg, but no go ... if
however i kill xffm-deskview, start xfdesktop, then restart
xffm-deskview, open "desktop settings", tick and untick the "show image"
button, i get xffm-deskview plus my background. but then if i save the
session on exit, it don't give me the same setup on logging in (i have
to basically go through the above steps again). is there a better way to
do this, or is this still being worked on?

it doesn't happen *all* the time, but most of the time it does.

when i'm browsing through folders in icon view, if i browse to a lower
level that has fewer files/folder in it, then occasionally the
files/folders from the parent are still displayed in the level below (i
hope that makes sense) ... here is an example of what i mean:

1) http://www.machinehasnoagenda.com/images/folder_1.png
this is the parent folder ... all the icons are displayed properly.

2) http://www.machinehasnoagenda.com/images/folder_2.png
this is the rpm child folder ... as you can see, the
svn/tarball/and even rpm folders are displayed even though they're
not there.

i'm pretty new to, um, complaining about this sort of stuff ... would i
put something like this on bugzilla?

It was hidden in the 4.3.3.0 branch. It's now in HEAD as well.

The convenience of single clicking to shut down the computer is vastly
exceeded by the danger. I would like to delete or disable this

(XFCE works great in this configuration!) However, I accidentally clicked
"Turn off the computer". Luckily I was sitting at home and could push
the power button to turn it back on, but the thought of doing this while
away from home is too scary to think about.

Is there a way to remove this dangerous option?

Patches are great. Patches are not required.

bugs.xfce.org has the Xfce bugzilla. Pretty straightforward.

to correctly submit a bug report, what format this report should have,

I also have little time to spend in actually providing any code. I am
sorry to take this stand, as I know xfce is all about the voluntary work
of others, and I'd hate to come along demaning features, and not having
the opportunity to actually contribute myself.

As we'd like to have our new desktop environment set up for the next
semester starting in august, I think we will just do the skel-thing,
copying in a default setup for new users. Especially since we'd like to
alter the default focus behaviour as well.

However, I'd really like to see a system similar to what Jasper suggests.
I as a sysadmin could just setup my own config, and then just copy my user
config to the system config dir, and everything would work out nice.
