Varanus salvator komaini is no longer a recognized taxon. It is considered a form (not sure of the exact genetic relationship..) of Varanus salvator macromaculatus. However, this name is still widely (yet erroneously) used, particularly by dealers with whom a unique-sounding name = a higher price tag.

There are four currently recognized: Varanus salvator salvator, Varanus salvator macromaculatus, Varanus salvator bivittatus, and Varanus salvator andamanensis. Four former subspecies (togianus, marmoratus, nuchalis, and cumingi) were elevated (or I should say, re-elevated) to full species a couple years ago. In addition, the taxonomy of the salvator-complex is some areas - particularly Sulawesi - is not yet resolved and the description of new forms is likely.

There are currently 67 generally-recognized species. However, there are quite a few cases where the taxonomy is far from being worked out and in which distinct species almost certainly exist but have yet to be described.

It describes Varanus boulengeri, a junior synonym of Varanus semiremex. It was downgraded to a subspecies of semiremex by Mertens (1942) before being eliminated altogether by I forget who. Anyway, check your inbox.
