Jemmy is designed as a UI reproducing library - no more.
Other tools exist out there which could do what you describe: they
called test harness.
JUnit is likely to be the most used.
If you consider using JUnit, take a look on XTest too. This is an
extension over JUnit. It is built within Netbeans, but, there is a
binary distribution of it, which could be used standalone.
