address->location databases

Let's say I have a list of european addreses which I wish to plot on a
map.

Are there free databases to turn those addreses into locations?

I know of Freethepostcode.org for UK postcodes. What about other
countries?

Suggestions welcome.

I'm not a geodata expert but what about GeoNames:

   <http://www.geonames.org/>

More details on:

   <http://ckan.net/package/read/geonames>

However I'm not sure this works with 'addresses' especially European
postal codes (it will just work with towns/regions etc).
