I have a friend who does graphic design I asked him throw some icons together.  He is willing to help out if needed.

Here are all the icons I developed. Not all apply but you get the idea of how the family would work. The over state in the sample I sent earlier can be changed to any color. The color I choose may not be the best for the GUI.

My email received the icons out of order and I sent out the first email which is somewhat of a continuation of the first set of Images.  Again the artist can add text to them change the color.  He can customize these however we wish.  Let me know what everyone thinks.

Ah, this second file is clearer (I wasn't sure what all of the icons were in the first one)

I like the measuring cup + clock for preparation time and I like the oven + clock for the cooking time.

I'd been playing with a similar idea for the preptime/cooktime icons for myself (though mine look worse -- see attached).

As to the category/cuisine/recipe icons, I'm not sure the metaphors are clear. In my own attempts at icons (which, believe me, are far worse than the ones you sent), I was playing with the following metaphors...

category - a divider in a recipe box (though a "tag" might be better)

recipe - a recipe card

cuisine - a world map (this isn't great... I like the look of the cuisine icon you sent along, but I think it might confuse the meaning,
since it suggests "cuisine" as "fine dining" rather than as cooking style/region).

As for colors, etc., Gourmet is a GNOME project and the best standards we have as such for icons etc. is the tango project -- http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Icon_Theme_Guidelines

The other thing I've been playing with is programmatically overlaying rating and preptime/cooktime information on recipe icons. See the attached screenshot for an idea of how that's working right now -- I'd be interested in your friend's idea on how to make this more visually consistent/appealing. What I have right now are pie charts showing preptime/cooking time (red pies stand for minutes on a clock, blue pies stand for hours) and then star overlays for rating. It's nice to get al lthis information on the screen visually, but obviously it's a challenge to make it look good on the screen.
