I'd like to announce the start of the GRAMPS for Windows sourceforge project.

https://apps.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/gramps4win/index.php?title=Main_Page

It's purpose is to help us windows developers coordinate and develop solid windows solutions. I'm sure I'm forgetting to document some details but I think I did an OK job of getting it started and documenting where I hope to go with it.

The first alpha of a binary install has been released. It uses py2exe to compile and bundle gramps with all it's dependencies! Nothing else to install just gramps!

From the wiki:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
gramps-3.1.1-4win-0.1-bin-install.exe is a hack. It is only intended as a developer alpha and not meant for even user testing. It does compile and run but at the moment is little better than a proof of concept. It does not require any other dependencies. I was able to build it, install it on my laptop and run it. All I did was create a tree and add a couple of people but it did run. If you choose to try it out note that it will install to c:\Program Files\gramps-3.1.1-4win-0.1 without any prompting so be sure you don't have anything in that directory! Also note that it does not yet use it's own settings directory and still uses the default directory.

Known issues include:

  • Exporting - some exports don't show up. Probably some of their dependencies didn't get compiled for some reason. At least that was the case for csv.
  • When closing GRAMPS a message will pop up to check the log. When you do it will tell you the spell checker isn't installed.
  • For some reason there appear to be some python modules not being picked up by py2exe's import crawler, were working on it but who knows what might be missing.

I'd like to invite any one who wants to get involved in the development to send me an email with your sourceforge account name and I'll add you as a developer to the project. One area that I know some people here have experience in is NSIS so helping with the installers would be a great help.
