alsa on ubuntu 8

Hello,

I just discovered that on Ubuntu 8.04 modprobing em8300 with or witout
audio_driver=alsa does not register em8300 as alsa device. This happens
both with 0.16.4 and 0.17.0. em8300 gets loaded and only loads
soundcore module as dependency, but not alsa.

What am I missing?
