amd64 w/ ia32libs and thunderbird 3.0

I'm new to using ia32 with karmic, and am running thunderbird 3.0b2. It
worked fine in 32 bit jaunty but can't resolve my mailserver since
switching to amd64. It does resolve from /etc/hosts if I put my
mailserver there but I'm wondering - where should I start reading to
learn how ia32libs work? And anyone have any ideas on what to do to fix
my thunderbird?
