I've also built some packages and there has been some more recent
interest in the project on the #archlinux-ppc irc channel but it seems
no one in the channel has access to the repo's and many of the mirrors
are down due to the lack of activity.
My main issue is that I cannot seem to get a working GCC build and as I
need one with --disable-altivec for my specific hardware many packages
in the repos are not working for me. If anyone at least has a working
PPC GCC PKGBUILD that would be extremely helpful to me.

I also have a small repo setup with some Wii spcific packages at
[archii] http://thestorm.taricorp.net/repo/ppc/archii/ but I cannot
continue untill I have an updated gcc.

I have a port, which I update every half year or so, to keep a couple of
machines running. The repository is dead on the internet, mainly because I
have not bothered the upkeep due to lack of interest.

Me, killajoe and ecraven. Xavery also contributed a lot, but he doesn't have a
machine to help out anymore. I chatted with some of the other i586 porters,
but none of them was interested in continuing their ports, however I did get
some helpful pointers.
I've been told that there is another new i586 port, but nobody could point me

updated on 2009-06-29. That package (pacman actually) has Zac Brown as the
maintainer, which isn't even working with the project at this point. Anyone
know the status (and was the packages built using a cluster of some kind, or

Could anyone try to reproduce the bug I'm seeing in inkscape
on x86-64: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/182047. It seems that
they can't reproduce it, but I am able to trigger it both with the
official package and the latest svn revision compiled locally.

PPC: libpoppler: please, update to 0.8.4

I'm an user of the PPC port of ArchLinux. I have problems
with evince, which crashes after reloading a .pdf a few
times. The installed packages are:

extra/poppler 0.8.3-1
extra/evince 2.22.1.1-2 (gnome-extra)

After a search, I've found that the problem I have is
already known and fixed:

PPC: Ghostscript should be recompiled?

(I'm an user of the PPC port of ArchLinux)

It seems that ghostscript should be recompiled. Infact,
the following dynamic libraries are missing on my sys-
tem:

# ldd /usr/bin/gs|grep 'not found'
libkrb5.so.22 => not found
libhx509.so.1 => not found

The installed version of these libraries is:

/usr/lib/libkrb5.so.25.0.0
/usr/lib/libhx509.so.3.0.0

Hey there,

I was actually using the git version from projects.archlinux.org. I've
attached the changes I've made so far, but it still complains about
not finding "kernel26" (in PPC it's called "kernel26-pmac"). However
that doesn't seem to cause any issues.

I might have changed things outside the git repository, so I'm not
sure that's all I did yet. I hope it was though.

You should check out the git version. It fixes a lot of problems on
the released version. I haven't released it because there are still
more things I'd prefer it to do but I haven't had the inclination to
actually implement them.

If you have an existing install that works on your ppc, check if your
toolchain supports 64bit:

$ vi test.c
int main() {
return 0;
}
$ gcc -m64 -o test test.c

If it compiles w/o complaining you should be able to build a kernel for
powerpc64.

Your .config has to include:

CONFIG_PPC64=y
CONFIG_PPC=y

With this kernel built, install image and modules onto a usb stick, boot
up and install arch and configure this kernel & modules for your
preferred bootloader. Indepth knowledge about this procedure can be
found all over the place I'm sure. ^^

Actually it does, it most probably would require to build a 64bit kernel
with 32bit emulation enabled. I have no idea how yaboot would fail on a
G5 as I don't have any.

I can say this much though, archppc works just fine on my ps3 with a
powerpc64 kernel, although I wouldn't recommend running it if you expect
performance.

Arch PPC is 32 bit only, so it does NOT work on a G5.I have Debian running on
an Imac G5 and it installed without the slightest problem (it is a Debian
only machine).
There have been more posts, with possible solutions, on this topic so a search
for G5 or Apple 64 bit in the forum could help.

I installed Arch on my x86 Desktop and my macbook and i love it. I attempted to install Debian on
my G5 PowerMac but had no luck (yaboot problems). What I would like to know is how well does Arch
work on a G5, does anyone here use it on a regular basis, and what are the challenges to
installing it. Eventually, I would like to stop using OS X.

It is possible. For example you could install one of swiftfox packages,
for example. Unfortunately 32 bit JDK/JRE packages conflict with 64bit, so
you can't have both. With some manual tweaking it should be possible
though :)

Just wondering: is there any way to also install the 32-bit jre/jdk
(and firefox) and use those when this functionality is needed?

64bit JRE/JDK doesn't include browser plugin at all.
This is 5 year old bug/feature request now:

The workaround is not to use official Sun's JRE/JDK :)

? I don't understand. Both the jre and jdk packages are available in
64-bit. Are you saying that they work, but that the browser plugin that
comes with them does not? That'd be annoying for me, but not
catastrophic. Any workaround that you know of?

Hmmm ... this might not be such a big issue then. I don't use flash
that often (especially on my server box; I only really use it as a
desktop occasionally) so as long as it *mostly* works, I should be OK.

Is that really the only major outstanding issues? If so, I should be in
good shape.
