Clint,

Apologies for the delay in getting this to you.  It has been a rough
semester.

I am able to successfully build ATLAS-3.8.0 using
gcc-4.2.2 on

 ia64-unknown-linux-gnu
 x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
 i686-pc-linux-gnu
 powerpc-apple-darwin8.9.0
 sparc-sun-solaris2.8 (32-bit build)
 sparc-sun-solaris2.8 (64-bit build)
 i386-pc-solaris2.10  (really x86_64-SunOS) (32-bit build)
 i386-pc-solaris2.10  (really x86_64-SunOS) (64-bit build)
 powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu
 i386-pc-solaris2.9
 powerpc-ibm-aix5.2.0.0 (64-bit build)

but had problems with builds on

  i386-apple-darwin8.9.1
  powerpc-ibm-aix5.2.0.0 (32-bit build)

Details follow.

When I do 'configure ...' I get:

[stuff deleted]
Pointer width configured as 32
cmnd=make IRun_arch args="-v 2  -O 11 -s 4 -t" | fgrep 'CPU THROTTLE='
Cannot detect CPU throttling.
/bin/sh: line 1: 10564 Abort trap              ./xconfig -d s
/home/kate/atlas-3.8.0/src/obj-x86-Darwin-gcc-4.2.2/../ATLAS/ -d b
/home/kate/atlas-3.8.0/src/obj-x86-Darwin-gcc-4.2.2 -v 2 -Ss kern
/usr/local/bin/x86-Darwin/gcc -Si nof77 1
xconfig exited with 134

I have NOT upgraded to the latest version of the Darwin OS yet.  (So
this is Tiger, not Leopard.)
This is a Core Duo, NOT a Core 2 Duo machine.

During 'make', the build fails with

ar: 0707-126 ATL_flushcache.o is not valid with the current object file mode.
Use the -X option to specify the desired object mode.
ar: 0707-126 ATL_cputime.o is not valid with the current object file mode.
Use the -X option to specify the desired object mode.

Looking back over the output from 'make', it seems that the -maix64 flag is
being used to compile these objects.  This is not correct for a 32-bit build.

I admit that I am mostly interested in a 64-bit build, but as the machine
is a bi-arch machine that defaults to 32-bits, I included this test.
