auto sizing

I went to some trouble to produce the two examples I'm providing so I
hope everyone appreciates my efforts to keep the following two
iterations stripped down and color-standardized.

EXAMPLE 1
A version of the page I'm trying to build; TEXT-ONLY; and background-
colors in place of what would be a graphic (where applicable).  Page
renders perfectly in both browsers; unfortunately it isn't what I'm
trying to build.
