Hi,
I made some tests with avrdude and Xmega.

First Result: avrdude 5.6 writs flash and performs a chip erase with
x128a1, avrdude 5.7 and 5.8 failed with following message

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
$ avrdude -px128a1 -e

avrdude: AVR device initialized and ready to accept instructions

Reading | ################################################## | 100% 0.00s

avrdude: Device signature = 0x000000
avrdude: Yikes!  Invalid device signature.
         Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
         this check.

avrdude done.  Thank you.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will do some more tests with avrdude 5.6 and x128a1

Markus

As Markus Burrer wrote:

You didn't write the programmer you've been using.  I guess (based
on our previous conversation) it is an AVRISPmkII.
