backport for etch /or/ easy way to run 2.6 ?

I am running Gimp on debian etch... just love this gimp,
however, there are some nice features in 2.6 Id like to try
also.  

I do not find an Etch backport for gimp-2.6, so I wonder...
would it be possible just to run 2.6 version using older libraries
(those installed with 2.2) ?
