beta8 for 3.8

Hi all,

I'd like to get 3.8 out of the door, so here's another beta:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jorgan/files/jorgan-installer/3.8/jOrgan-3.8-beta8-installer1.exe/download

I wasn't able to reproduce any performance problems. Note that the new
memory extension has no negative impact on the overall performance of
jOrgan.
If you do experience sluggish behavior in the application, please try to
isolate the cause and give specific feedback.

Please give it this beta a final test drive.

Thanks

Sven

Hi Sven,

I had a small dual core Atom processor and operating jOrgan in Puppy. I experienced 3 to 5 seconds  for a general registration to load after pressing the piston. I tried no graphics and then headless and could not get an acceptable registeration change. I have since installed the same memory stick in an AMD Brisbane 2800mhz system with 2 gigs of ram and found an allmost acceptable refresh time between generals and when running headless almost intantaneous generals piston change. Another piece of info - when running the 2200 mhz Atom processor I experienced the most delay with registrations with a high harmonic structure in the SFs.

May be some thing here!

Later,

JimS

1. So far, no operational problems found.

2. Full screen window handling has returned to previous version 3.7
behavior, which is much preferred to the behavior of 3.8 Beta 7.
    Now, with Beta 8,
a.) the full screen no longer reverts to windowed mode if the
mouse is moved to another display (i.e. another display device
        on the computer gets focus),
b.) the full screen paints in one single "flash" instead of the
sequential ripple of objects coming into view over a period of
        about 2 seconds seconds,
c.) the task bar can no longer be activated "over" the jOrgan
        full screen display.

Slow combination changes has been noted on Linux applications.  I had it
with jOrgan V3.7 on Ubuntu 9.04.  I am not aware of a resolution to
this.  I have now upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 however have not had a chance
to try jOrgan on it yet.

This I believe is a different symptom from the slow combination set time
noted by some in jOrgan V3.8b7 in Windows applications.  I did not
experience this problem.

Rick

Additional observation:

  3. The Piston capturing (captor function) has also returned to its
former behavior.  The time to capture any piston, regardless of
the number of referenced elements is almost intantaneous (as
opposed to about 12 seconds for "generals" and 4-5 seconds for
     "divisionals").

I have just spent a wonderful 3+ hours playing jOrgan V3.8b8.

I can't fault it:
Memory capture is faster.
Add References are sorted in alphabetical order
Recorder is working well
I created a red when active set piston

I am really enjoying actually playing and spending only a fraction of time tinkering with settings.

Thank you

Everything seems good.

Combination stop action seems faster. Display refresh, too.

Creating the tracks before recording is a bit tedious. I did like the way the recorder's tracks were automatically there in the previous version.

Those are my only thoughts.

Hi Sven,
everything I tested with 38b8 was functioning perfectly here.
I again double tested beta 7 and 8 for the taskbar thing - my taskbar was always covered by jOrgan.

On systems with a bigger L2 Cache of the main processor (1 MB) I experienced most less sluggishness in combination action, no meaning if I have 2 or 4 GB of memory. A 2 GHz Toshiba Notebook and a Pentium Atom 1,6 GHz Nettop were not able to perform my own organ models satisfying. On the other hand I don't await an application which is able to picture an 100 ranks organ, to run on an old 200 MHz typewriter computer.

Thank you very much, again, for your splendid work.

Regards
Bernd.

agreed on the auto track thingy.

I'll see if I can add something before 3.8 closes.

Hello Sven

Thanks for thinking about this.  This is my only reservation about V3.8 also.

I don't know what would be involved in programming it, but if the keyboard and console elements that the user wanted to be opened with a new file by default could be added as references to the recorder element, I think this would be a useful way to set it up.  You could leave the current functionality to allow some adjustment by the user at the playing console.

I would prefer the console(s) be in record mode as default. That would make a disposition record ready with the console button alone.

Just my preference.

Re: beta8 for 3.8

I installed jOrgan 2.8 beta 8 with no problems. Because I had had problems with beta 4, I had been using beta 2. Even beta 2 had been creating ranks with set 176 set 121 messages shown as Disengaged instead of the proper Engaged, but this aberration has been corrected in beta 8. Beta 8 was working so well that today I completed the installation of eleven more ranks of virtual pipes in the unused patches of The English Organ v104, making a total of 64 ranks in my SoundBlaster disposition. I greatly enjoy playing it.

I'd like to get 3.8 out the door, so here's another beta [beta8]...

Sven,

Screen in normal mode - Recorder window
- It would be useful to have the .mid filename displayed (at the right of
the timing data, for instance)
- I prefered the 2 buttons import / export in place of only eject. In my
opinion they were easier to use and more secure.

Fullscreen mode - (means no access to the Recorder window !)
- It is possible to display the .mid filename with a skin element. That's
good.
It would be very nice if :
- 'Recorder Play' could operate the same way as the 'Play' button of the
Recorder window
(activated = Play   / desactivation = Stop play  /  automatic
deactivation of the button on end of file and automatic rewind)
- 'Recorder Record' could operate the same way as the 'Record' button of the
Recorder window
(activated = Record   / desactivation = Stop record)
- 'Recorder Stop' could be replaced by 'Recorder Rewind' to operate the same
way as the 'Rewind' button of the Recorder window
(activation = Rewind to position 0  - Locking
It would also be very nice if :
- the 2 timing zones could be displayed on the console - It would offer an
important security to avoid overwrite a ;mid file)

All these functions would work as shortcuts to the corresponding elements of
the Recorder window.

Or maybe, in other words, if you could find a solution to display and access
these Recorder window elements on the console, would be perfect.

That's just my personal opinion resulting of many tests and experiments with
3.8.beta8.
I have not found a 100% satisfactory use of the Recorder Play/Record/Stop
elements. The 3 elements separately work OK, but their combinated use is
unsatisfactory in a real performance.

All the best
Jacques

Sven,

I have to correct my last post.
I beg your pardon.

About Fullscreen mode :
What I find Ok :
-  the display of the .mid filename with a skin element
-  the  'Recorder Play' operating the same way as the 'Play' button of the
Recorder window
-  the 'Recorder Record' element operating the same way as the 'Record'
button of the Recorder window
What I think wishful :
-  'Recorder Stop' being replaced by 'Recorder Rewind' to operate the same
way as the 'Rewind' button of the Recorder window.
The 'Recorder Stop' is not useful as a second action on Recorder Play or
Record stops the function.
A 'Recorder Rewind' element should be useful to re-play or re-record the
.mid file from the start.
- the possibility to display the 2 timing zones on the console would be
great as there is no other way to check the position in the file,
particularly useful in record mode.  It would offer an important security to
avoid overwrite the current .mid file.

My remarks about "Screen in normal mode - Recorder window" are still valid.
-.mid filename displayed (at the right of the timing data, for instance)
- 2 buttons import / export in place of only eject. In my opinion they were
easier to use and more secure, particularly for the save function. (Export
permitted a "save as" function !)

Thank so much
Jacques

I am wondering if there can be an easier way to do with linked files?

I try whenever I link a file in my jOrgan disposition to place it in the dispositions folder of my current version of jOrgan.  In the disposition I then name it as just the file name with no path so it is looking at the same folder that the disposition file is in.

When I send the file to someone else, they are telling me they can't play the linked midi file (without first reloading it) and they can't save the disposition.

I suspect the reason they can't save the disposition is because the path for the memory file is not correct.

Could there be a single TAB Window where all linked files referred to in a disposition are displayed?
Could this be viewable without needing to go into Construct Mode?
Maybe it needs to be addressed in the Customize function when someone loads a new disposition?
At least this way people would not need to scroll through all the elements to find ones with file links to be checked and/or corrected.

Rick

Hi all,

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jorgan/files/jorgan-installer/3.8/jOrgan-3.8-beta8-installer1.exe/download

I wasn't able to reproduce any performance problems. Note that the new
memory extension has no negative impact on the overall performance of
jOrgan.
If you do experience sluggish behavior in the application, please try to
isolate the cause and give specific feedback.

Please give it this beta a final test drive.

Thanks

Hi Rick,

if you share your dispositions with other users, you should make sure to use relative paths to 'linked files'.

Change into construct mode and take a look on the 'storage' property of the Memory element. Instead of "C:/foo/bar/baz.memory" is should have the value "bar/baz.memory", presumed that your disposition is located in "C:/foo/".

The same holds for Recorder#performance and Fluidsynth#soundfont.

Hope this helps

Thank you Sven

I do use relative paths in the configuration, however as soon as I use the "Eject Performance" button to change a Midi file, or use "Eject Storage" button to change the Memory file, the program re-enters the full path.

To correct this One needs to remember to go into construct mode and check that all paths are relative before distributing a disposition.

Can you think of any other reason why a V3.8b8 program will not save.  I have a disposition tester that is telling me he can't save.  I have asked him to check these path addresses but he says after checking this it still won't save?

I am trying to work out how I can make a disposition as friendly as possible for novice users and how much documentation is required to help them get things working properly.  I think we have a long way to go.  At the moment I really think jOrgan is only for the tech savvy, and is not accessible to average PC users.

How about a program that allows you to build a disposition from a selecetion of tools and buttons?
