hey everyone,
we didn't quite make it for the last "letsmakegames". Our broadway cafe game for the iPhone has finally been released.

http://www.istpika.com/en/press-releases/219/

It connects to facebook and operates in English, Japanese and Korean.

Tah. sales are not too bad at the moment.

But on the onther hand ...
We run a leaderboard server which tracks each player.
By comparing real sales to access data, we've found that 80% of registered users are using pirated copies.
By doing a bit of hunting it was easy to find the cracked copies floating about.
We're considering methods to block the pirates :)

Wow. 80%. That makes me feel ill, and sad.

Last time I ranted about this, people didn't believe me ;-(

Your experience matches what I have read over the last 6 months on
various blogs and especially the iPhoneSB group.

Do you think naming and shaming on the leaderboards is a viable
tactic, or interfering with high scores?

I'm in design mode at present trying to decide if anti-piracy should
be considered part of community services.

This might be a good way to decide between OpenFeint et al.

If your "anti-piracy" tactics turn pirates into buyers, then they are
worthwhile. Otherwise, you are wasting your time.

Hmm there is a profound piece of wisdom in that sentence. I like the
idea. I feel better now.

I agree.  It's possible to turn pirates into purchasers, but at the end
of the day your time will likely be better spent making another (better)
game, or working on your marketing.

Personally, I'd be inclined to let them get away with one game, but be much harsher with the second. That way, if they like your first game good enough to want the second (no questions asked), they'll pay for it :)

I wish people were content with free demos without wanting the steal the whole game. And I hope that no one in the scene in Perth is doing any pirating! That would be a bit like backstabbing, really :(

I'm not really part of the iPhone scene at all, but I'm somewhat surprised that there is so much piracy when (as far as I know), most apps/games are $1-2? That is correct, right? I recently bought a game called 'Droplitz' on Steam for $2, and just kind of find it hard that anyone would both pirate a title they can get for a matter of dollars? I mean, I barely thought about purchasing Droplitz. I wasn't even expecting to like it that much, it was just so cheap I was willing to give it a go - I've certainly spent a lot more and been burnt.

I guess part of the difference is that (again, as far as I know) titles don't sell for $80-$100 dollars on the iPhone, while they obviously do on the PC, so the relative tingling of the 'Bargain-Sense' is less.

Just my rambling thoughts on the matter.

Note: Being Steam, it was obviously US dollars. Also, Droplitz is now $10, a price where I start giving things more scrutiny.
