caching of default view translations

Hi,

I noticed that default view translations were killing the db because
they were not cached so I changed this behavior
( http://github.com/pic/globalize/commit/669fa2762e8dbb1bdaddef583158901a8d1328d4
)

Now I'm wondering if there is any side effect, are there any reasons
to keep default translations out of cache?

Recently Judith Meyer suggested to completely avoid to hit the db for
default translations:
http://www.nabble.com/Re%3A-globalize_translations-table-p17272887s17045.html

This is a good point but I still prefer to have a chance to translate
even the default because sometimes they are "symbols" (not in Ruby
sense).

Any thought?
Thanks,

Nicola

Hi,

I noticed that, too, and also I don't like that every time a string is
looked up the server will also check whether the string needs to be
added... if you changed the string, it's added as new and the old
string's translations won't be accessible anymore but they'll still
clog up the database... I will soon be presenting a more efficient
solution.
Basic improvements:
- use of IDs for faster lookup of view translations; these IDs will
also make sure that updated strings are not lost; rather the
translation interface will present the new string with the old
translation for updating
- no looking-up of base-language translations except if it's a symbol
- updating or adding of strings will happen only on request and you
can set it to run every time you deploy, weekly or whatever interval
you think is good
- support for multiple variables in one string
- no need to change the application code compared to how it looks with
standard Globalize

Best wishes,

Judith

happy to know that there are so exciting improvements around the corner!

I've put together some pieces about this issue too, maybe
http://github.com/pic/globalize/commit/438b2cb53247fa901114e3e0cda7487bf74ee5d1
could be of some help.

Best regards,
Nicola
