Hello,

I don't seem to be able to copy anything in font forge.

None of the variations of copy/cut i have tried puts anything in the
clipboard (neither the X11 or aqua clipboards)

any ideas?

You need configure in Apple's X11 the preferences. Then an exchange
between X11 and Aqua is enabled. Have you checked with another X
client like xterm or GNU Emacs?

Other people have reported this issue, but I have been unable to
duplicate it. Copy/Paste works fine for me in all versions of Mac OS/X
which I have running.

Which means I can't fix the problem since I can't duplicate it.

The only thing I can think of is that Aqua is somehow grabbing the X11
clipboard -- there are reasons for doing this -- it would make the X11
clipboard fit better into the mac model. Or it would if it worked.

All I've been able to think of is to add a preference item so fontforge
will not use the X11 clip. A patch to this effect has already been
posted to this list and is in the cvs tree. Of course, once you've built
a new version of ff you still need to turn on the preference item to see
if it works.

Would it make some sense to cross-post this also to mailto:Xquartz-
dev@..., http://lists.macosforge.org/mailman/
listinfo.cgi/xquartz-dev ? Jeremy Huddleston, the developer of recent
X11 versions, is on this list (could be still on holidays) plus some
other folks (for example George Peter Staplin) who understand a lot
of Aqua/X11 interplay ...

If you want to, sure.

I have never actually seen the problem myself, so I'm just guessing.
When I upgraded from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 everything worked.
When I upgraded to the most recent developer tools (which upgrades X11)
-- everything worked.

Perhaps there is an intermediate version of developer tools which is
broken. Perhaps only a full install (rather than an upgrade) shows the
bug.

But since I can't reproduce the issue, I can only speculate and am
hesitant about making a bug report.

I can verify this problem happening on IntelMac X.5.7, but not on IntelMac X.4.11. Is there a preference now to get round it?

There is a preference item to turn off X-clipboard sync that has
worked for me. I'm not on a Mac but the same kind of problem occurs
with the X clipboard manager I'm using ("parcellite"). A drawback is
that I can't copy from one fontforge instance to another, but this
isn't that bad, because fontforge can open more than one font at a
time.

I had the same problem with Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.1.

SOLUTION:
From X11 preferences > Pasteboard, disabling "Update pasteboard when CLIPBOARD changes"
allowed copy/pasting glyphs to work again.

Sigh. It was working in 10.6, but apple does seem to have broken it again in 10.6.1.

This is not a fontforge bug, but an apple one.
Various work-arounds have been presented on the list. Choose the one which is least objectionable to you.
