Question about select controls in repeaters

Hi all,
I have a quick question about the automatic selection of items in select controls.

First of all, I know that if I want to have an item of a select control to be selected when the form opens, I just have to provide the item's id in the node of the instance relevant to the select.

BUT, despite my not providing that id in the instance, I can see sometimes that an item is selected in the control. This happens when the select is in a form embedded in a repeater. And the most curious is that another select, which comes earlier in the form does not have that "problem" of having an item automatically selected. If someone has some thoughts about this, I would be glad if they shared. Thanks.

I double checked both the single file and all the path starting from WEB-INF: they have -rw-r--r--

I can access and edit it as both as a root and as a user

chiba config file which is normally located in WEB-INF. I would
suggest to open a shell and look at the permissions you got for that
file. You should have at least read permission.

Dear Paolo Di Pietro,

I tried the released war file on ubuntu (9.10) with the
core-tar-packages from tomcat.apache.org.
I checked version 5.5.28 and 6.0.20 and everything started up just
fine. What I did was copying the unmodified war-file to the webapps
directory and call startup.sh from the bin directory. For Tomcat 5.5 I
also had to set JAVA_HOME.

Can you retry it with one of the provided packages from apache and see
if the error still occurs?

When I deploy a chiba-3.0.0b2 exactly as downloaded, the application doesn’t start. The error is

FAIL - Encountered exception java.lang.IllegalStateException: Container org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/chiba-3.0.0b2] has not been started

I spent a lot of time looking for the error, and I found that removing the following lines from the WEB.XML file chiba starts (but obviously doesn’t intercept .xhtml files):

Thanks for reporting this problem. We're not yet testing IE so we
wouldn't found it ourselves. Hope we can investigate it sometime and
probably find a solution. But please understand that we have
priorities - i'm currently working very hard to automate the complete
XForms 1.1 test suite with Selenium on FF which will allow us to run
the tests on different browsers (once i'm through with working through
the test issues - currently around 90-94% pass). Once that's done
another few cases have to be fixed before we roll our a new release.

Probably we need to find a JS hack for IE. If you're able to
investigate further on this and find additional information it will be
greatly appreciated.

Before going to final we'll definitely test IE and fix such issues.

I assume that you don't know how to pass your params to your service?

First of all let me mention that you don't have to program the
connection. All is done in pure XForms markup by using a
<xf:submission .../>

Here's not the place to explain all options of submission (there are
to many) but maybe a short example may do:

assume you want to access a service with a GET and pass some params to
it then you can do something like this:

<xf:submission method="GET" replace="instance"
target="instance('service-response')" (...)>
<xf:resouce value="concat('myUrl?param1=', instance('params')/param1)"/>
<xf:submission>

Would be probably easier to explain if you give a bit more detail
about the service you'd like to access and what your specific problem
is. Hope you got an idea anyway.

I am using chiba 3.0.0b2, and I have a problem with the textarea component with IE7.

The textarea displays the content on a single row with all new lines replaced by a space.

The problem occurs for both the simple textarea and the dojo textarea.

The same instance is correctly displayed with Firefox (3.5).

You could try wsdl2xforms (https://sourceforge.net/projects/wsdl2xforms/) with Chiba. It's currently in alpha status, because it hasn't received too much testing yet. If you encounter any problems, report them in Sourceforge forum. I'll do my best to help you out.

I think I "get" the XFORMs presentation aspects, but I'm completely lost on how to hook up to REST services, populate a model programatically etc. Maybe I'm mssing it, but I've failed to find any example of this aspect.

This is the correct behavior as per spec as there's already a readonly
modelitem at the node bound by that bind element. Line 61 is binding
to ArticleTechParagrapheRW/field_23/associationItem which is already
be used in line 57 (in that case with a predicate). Nevertheless in
line 61 you try to again add the readonly property causing the
exception.

The XForms spec. allows only one modelitem per type (readonly, valid,
required, relevant, type and calculate) for a Node in the instance.
Probably that will change in future versions. Chiba 3 behaves a bit
more friendly by not just throwing he exception but raising a
xforms-binding-exception.

I'm using Alfresco CMS which includes an older release of Chiba (v1.3.0), and running into a problem with a web form defined using an XML Schema. I realize this is an older release but I wanted to find out if this has come up before and whether there's a work around or if a newer release fixes this issue, or if I'm doing something wrong.

The schema in question is a slight modification of the "shiporder" sample from w3schools which has an xs:attribute on a xs:complexType, and when Alfresco attempts to make use of the form defined from this schema, it fails due to the following exception:

Caused by: org.chiba.xml.xforms.exception.XFormsException: model item for path '/so:shiporder/@orderid' does not exist
at org.chiba.xml.xforms.core.Instance.setNodeValue(Instance.java:328)
at org.chiba.xml.xforms.ui.Text.setValue(Text.java:156)

I've attached the very simple schema, with comments on the offending element. If I comment out the xsd:attribute and use the xsd:element a few lines above, it works fine. But changing the schema like that is, of course, the wrong solution.

Anyone have suggestions for how to work around this?

I can confirm the second one. I never needed input widget for dateTime,
so it didn't bother me too much. I fixed some issues with output widget
tough. Timezones didn't work correctly in edge cases, so I replaced the
dateTime parsing code. Also, when the form was populated dynamically,
the dates didn't get localized. I attached the patches, in case you
happen to get these errors too.

In general I had to fix quite a many bugs in Chiba 2.3. I once posted my
patches to Trac, but then the Trac crashed and I haven't had time to
recreate all the testcases and explanations. I still have most of the
patches and sent them to Joern for review. But as you said, Chiba 2.3 is
not in active development any more. I don't know, if any of my patches
applies to 3.0.

OK. I'm sending you the whole xhtml file in its readonly version (ending with "RO.xhtml"). Unfortunately, we have custom uri schemes in it so the file will not be "runnable" as-is.

Adding <readonly="true()"> on line 61 causes a problem. We need to remove the readonly
attribute to have the form display in the web client. If left in the file, we get an exception reading
(paraphrase) "this bind already has attribute readonly".

DateTime and Time widgets in Chiba 2.3

Hi all,
I have a few problems with the UI widgets used in Chiba 2.3 for bind elements with type "time" or "dateTime". I know, v2.3 will look "old" in some eyes but I hope someone encountered these problems before and can confirm these are bugs.

1- with " <xf:bind nodeset="datMaj" id="bind-3" type="time" />", the input field that is bound to this receives, as expected, a time widget for the user to select a time. BUT, when this element has "readonly=true()", the input field does not get disabled. Same goes for the widget, which is still accessible although the control is supposed to be "readonly". Inspecting the DOM tree with Firebug(Firefox) or DragonFly(Opera), the "xfreadonly" attribute is "undefined". When I change the type to anything else, the field is indeed disabled. When that type is "date", attribute "xfreadonly" is "true". I tried to set an alert in DropdownTimePicher.fillInTemplate and noticed that the initial value of xfreadonly is undefined.
To sum up, the problem is that the time widget does not reflect the "readonly" status as declared in the xhtml template.

2- when the type of a bind element is "dateTime", the dateTime widget does not appear: no icon, no "dojoAttachPoint" attribute in the DOM tree. I can see a DropdownDateTimePicker.js file in resources/scripts/chiba/widget.

If anyone ever noticed these, thanks for letting me know it.

Thanks a lot.

I'll certainly regard your post when working on it. As you refer to
examples: we currently work on setting up our 'XFormsFeatureExplorer'
initiative. We believe that live examples with explanations alongside
much more to get into XForms than reading long tutorials. So we
decided to start XForms pages that show example markup along with the
real running form. The reference pages for all control and group,
repeat, switch are ready now and will be part of the next release.
We'll then continue extending these example pages that are meant to be
used as a reference if you're unsure about the syntax or specialized
more complicated patterns like repeat paging, event handling issues,
actions and submission patterns. And not to forget of course repeats.

Hi all,
as a follow-up to my message below and for the record:

I finally solved the problem below by modifying the "PresentationContext.js" file:
- I added the required symbol by myself in the _setRequired function if the control is marked as required but its label doesn't have the symbol. Also required calling _setRequired (after the date and time widgets have been called)
- I moved the _setRequired, _setValid, etc. functions after the widgets are created (i.e. after the "if (!tmpControl) {...} else {...}" test in _handleStateChanged). This was required because in the case of widget'ed controls, the widget may be created after the update functions are called.

Chiba version is 2.3 or 2.4 (can't check it, I'm not at work right now).
Maybe it will help someone.

Thanks Tambet for your answer. You are right about the field performing as required: submit fails (and the "* - required" at the bottom of the page blinks) but the user does not know why... as there are no visual cues indicating required fields in the nested form.

I guess I was not too wrong when thinking that it could be a bug.

I tried your solution but it didn't work. I'm not very surprised of that since the solution does not explain the fact that read-only form controls are still modifiable on the UI.

For my education, what are "optional groups" ?

My next thing to try would be to test the behavior with Chiba 3.0 or other XForms processors.

Thanks for the reply. I am just starting a project with Xforms and I have decided to use Chiba so I'm still not sure what I will need

:-) but I can work as a "read-tester" if you want. My profile is Java Developer with good knowledge of XML, XSL,.... and a "just for living" knowldge of HTML, CSS and JScript.

XForms question

I have not been able to find a definitive answer within the archives, so if there is one and I missed it, please forgive me.

The project I am currently on is looking for a way to take an XSD schema file and transform it into a web form in a browser. We are currently looking at Altova's Authentic which uses an activeX control to take XSD's created with XMLSpy and combine them with proprietary format stylesheets created with Altova's other project, Stylevision, to create a web form. Needless to say, using activeX and tying ourselves to IE-only would suck.

Can anyone tell me if what we're looking for is possible with Chiba, and if so, are there any examples or documentation you can point me to that would kick start me in getting a working model up and running? I'd appreciate any help at all.

I don't know what Chiba version you are working with, but the cookbook
is since Chiba version 2.x out of date. It was divided into a user-
(see http://www.chiba-project.org <http://www.chiba-project.org/> ) and developer guide (to come).

With the upcoming Chiba 3 RC release (within the next few days) we
will bring up some more documentation.

As far as I know, there will be no explicit documentation about Chiba
and Eclipse since most people at Chiba work with Intellij or NetBeans
(for sure it works with Eclipse too). If you need support on this
please contact me directly.
