community year lists?

Hello,

Several of us in our town are planning to compile a
community-contributed list of all bird species seen here in 2010. While
many of us keep county lists in eBird, "town lists" don't seem to be
common. We see this as a way to involve new people in birding and, of
course, as yet another excuse to go birding! We haven't decided about
whether to make this a competitive venture, although that may happen by
design or not (which is fine).

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has been part of such an effort,
or knows of anywhere else where this has been done. For example, Tom
Wetmore maintains an elegant list for Plum Island, Massachusetts:
