Hi I have FreeBSD 7.1,poptop-1.3.4_2. When I connect from an xp machine the connection works fine but after two minutes or so the connection drops.

more /etc/ppp/ppp.conf
default:
 set timeout 0
 debug
set log Phase Chat LCP IPCP CCP TUN Command Connect
 ident user-ppp VERSION (built COMPILATIONDATE)
enable dns                             # request DNS info (for resolv.conf)

pptp:
  disable ipv6cp
  enable proxy
  enable MSChapV2
  set ifaddr 192.168.0.201 192.168.0.230-192.168.0.240 255.255.255.0

I use pretty much the same setup on other machines with no problems.
When the connetcion is live I can access the windows vnc server behind the freebsd server with out problems.
I have this in the messages log

Nov  2 09:43:00 bsd pptpd[11817]: CTRL: PTY read or GRE write failed (pty,gre)=(7,6)

Guys, this is not the first post relating similar issues... I have
myself experienced the same problem and I never got a real answer on how
to fix it.

Is this an unstability of Poptop with some versions of OS/Kernel/Distribs?
? Where can we find reliable working examples of poptop server config
files?
What is the average amount of simultaneous users?
What kind of traffic do you pass through the vpn link?

Emrah
P.s.: András mentioned Accel-pptp. Is there a real change in performance
compared to Poptop?

Hi,
The connection does not actually drop for me, meaning that on both side it shows that the link is on. Though after setting a strict lcp_echo, when the communication stops on the vpn, it also disconnects.

As for the question concerning performace between poptop and accel-pptp...
I only worked with poptop for two weeks, because i needed better peformance. My server has gigabit connection, at home i have 30mbit, but i could get about 8-10mbit at max, which was still a bit instabil: peaking at max, dropping, peaking again. With accel-pptp, which works as a kernel module instead of userspace, i could get almost 30mbit, almost no overhead noticable and in case of few connections, virtually no effect on cpu. With about 20 connections, 50MB/s up/down, about 95% idle cpu. This is why i try to work with accel-pptp.

This matches my expectation ... by avoiding the transition from kernel
context to user space for every packet, much less work needs to be done
and the latency is reduced.
