converting db to 4D server possible?I used to use 4D a lot years ago, and now want to migrate some old
databases from System 9 to Mac OS X. My wife and I work on this data together. Using 4D v11 SQL, can I set up a server at home and then have both of us using it as a client? In other words, can I take the old database (ported to OS X) and make it a server db so that we can work on it from different computers. Or does the DB need to be built from within Client? I currently have v11. What else do I need to purchase to do this? Thanks. ********************************************************************** 4D Basics hosted by 4D, Inc. http://www.4D.com/ Register for 4D Summit 2009 Today Early Bird Pricing Ends August 28th - http://www.4D.com/summit To Unsubscribe: mailto:4DBasics-off@... ********************************************************************** |

Yes... that's what server is for. It sounds like you'll need to do two things: 1) port this in v11 and 2) set it up for 4D server. I've not set up 4D server, but its supposed to be easy to take a stand- alone application and make it multi-user. You might also consider providing access via a web application. Web apps can give you access from ANY computer, not just those with the client software installed. Its a different path, but worth considering. As for your other question... to use the web for commerce? Absolutely! That's what I'm working on. Between 4D's AJAX package, Active4D, SOAP commands, email abilities.... you can do this. As for examples... don't know any of the top of my head. the 4d Business Kit (www.4dbk.com) will probably meet your needs out of the box. Also check out 4dtoday.com for a list of vendors and plugins that might help. It's not even a matter of making it a server db. Any 4D database can be opened in 4D Server. When you connect with 4D in Remote Mode (formerly 4D Client) it will look exactly the same as if you were running 4D in Local Mode. That's not to say that there can't be issues that are client/server specific, but I think you will find the majority of everything works fine. > I currently have v11. What else do I need to purchase to do this? You should contact 4D Sales to best answer this question.
