ddrescue/ubuntu not identifying disksHi Folks,
I thought when I discovered ddrescue that it would be somewhat of a pancea, and image anything I threw at it - I had after all heard very good things about it, I was in some respects glad to get away from windows. While I admit to still being in my early days of Ubuntu, I have discovered that two disks I have tried to image lately do not show up under a fsdisk -l, and accordingly I cant image in ddrescue. They do show sometimes in dmesg that they have been assigned sdc or whatever, but the rule seems to be if it dont show up in fdisk -l then it cant be imaged - or am I missing something? Anyone know any different? Cheers -AL PS: On these defective disks I have had excellent success with getdataback to get the files off, but of course getdata back doesnt do images. |

Re: ddrescue/ubuntu not identifying disksI have found that sometimes a disk does not show up in Ubuntu but
works perfectly using SystemRescueCd which is a gentoo live cd. SystemRescueCd includes ddrescue. http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page On Fri, Jul 31, 2009 at 1:55 PM, Al Grant<bigal.nz@...> wrote: > > Hi Folks, > > I thought when I discovered ddrescue that it would be somewhat of a pancea, > and image anything I threw at it - I had after all heard very good things > about it, I was in some respects glad to get away from windows. > > While I admit to still being in my early days of Ubuntu, I have discovered > that two disks I have tried to image lately do not show up under a fsdisk > -l, and accordingly I cant image in ddrescue. > > They do show sometimes in dmesg that they have been assigned sdc or > whatever, but the rule seems to be if it dont show up in fdisk -l then it > cant be imaged - or am I missing something? > > Anyone know any different? > > Cheers > > -AL > PS: On these defective disks I have had excellent success with getdataback > to get the files off, but of course getdata back doesnt do images. > -- > View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/ddrescue-ubuntu-not-identifying-disks-tp24750661p24750661.html > Sent from the Gnu - ddrescue mailing list archive at Nabble.com. > > > > _______________________________________________ > Bug-ddrescue mailing list > Bug-ddrescue@... > http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-ddrescue > _______________________________________________ Bug-ddrescue mailing list Bug-ddrescue@... http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-ddrescue |

Re: ddrescue/ubuntu not identifying disksIf they are IDE drives, I've also run into the problem and have had success experimenting with jumper and connection settings. For example, sometimes I have had to put the drive on an IDE channel all by itself and/or set the jumpers to cable select instead of master (and sometimes the other way around).
I would also check your BIOS to see if the drives are being detected. If they are not, then I suspect the hardware is having problems detecting the drives rather than the OS. But if they show in the BIOS, and IDE and jumper settings are not the issue, then I would also try using System Rescue CD. Todd On Jul 31, 2009, at 3:33 AM, Al Grant wrote:
