Hi.

The FreeBSD 8.0 introduces a new USB stack with a totally
different API. The upstream used to have during 8.0 development
old USB stack in <legacy/dev/usb/usb.h>, we decided to provide it too.

To solve current FTBFS please use patch bellow.

We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

    brltty | 4.1-1 | kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386

------------------- Reason -------------------
ROM; ANAIS
----------------------------------------------

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive (ftp-master.debian.org) and will not propagate to any
mirrors (ftp.debian.org included) until the next cron.daily run at the
earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

Bugs which have been reported against this package are not automatically
removed from the Bug Tracking System. Please check all open bugs and
close them or re-assign them to another package if the removed package
was superseded by another one.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 560268@....

Package: brltty
Version: 4.1-2
Severity: serious
Justification: FTBFS

Hi,

your package FTBFS on some archs because java-gcj-compat-dev can't be
installed:
| java-gcj-compat-dev: Depends: java-gcj-compat (= 1.0.80-5.1)
| Depends: gcj but it is not going to be installed
| E: Broken packages

This wasn't detected by edos, so it might be a bug anywhere within:
- edos
- sbuild
- java stuff
- your package.

I don't think your package is responsible, but it still currently FTBFS,
so let's open a bug to track this.

Build logs as usual:
  https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?suite=unstable&p=brltty

Hopefully a give back once the bug found and fixed will be sufficient.

Mraw,
KiBi.
>
> Yeah, some alternatives (like MathML and Lout) are emerging, but you
> should stick to LaTeX for anything serious until those are well
> supported.

Actually, the author of Lout has moved on to a different (still free software,
as far as I know) typesetting project. I don't know how far it has progressed,
but it's worth watching.

XML has some advantages, mostly inherited from SGML. Unfortunately, MathML is
horribly verbose syntactically, so the only reasonable way to create it is to
write the mathematics in TeX or a similar format and then convert it to
MathML. ITeX2MML is a simple translator that does this from a TeX-like format.

As to typesetting, it is possible to start with XML, or a format such as
RestructedText or one of the simple wiki-based markup languages from which XML
can be derived. The typesetting process then usually involves the conversion
of the XML to TeX macros, or alternatively, direct conversion to PDF via Fop,
which is still under development and intended to implement the full XSL
specification. If the typesetting is to be accomplished by TeX anyway, then I
don't see much advantage in starting with XML rather than writing LaTeX in the
first place, especially when one considers that LaTeX can be converted to
XHTML+MathML with tex4ht.

Thus I don't think there will be a viable TeX substitute until a new
typesetting system becomes available or Fop becomes compelling. If you only
need to deliver some form of HTML to the Web, then writing HTML directly, or
RestructredText or a similar format, would be best in my opinion.

Most of my writing is not mathematical in nature, but it is primarily intended
to be printed or viewed in typeset form as PDF files. This is why I prepare it
in LaTeX.

On the accessibility side, returning to the topic of this thread, formats such
as RestructuredText could be easier to edit than XML, particularly for users
of alternative input devices, although again, the Emacs nxml mode offers
validation and text completion for element and attribute names, so as long as
you don't need to write MathML XML might not pose any serious difficulties.

Hi.

This might be of interest to some of us. snd (a scheme based sound
editor) now provides a command-line only version for scripting purposes.

Package: snd-nox-alsa
Version: 11-5
Provides: snd-nox
Description: Sound file editor (without X support - ALSA)
Snd is a powerful sound file editor that can be customized and extended
using
the Scheme programming language.
.
This package contains a version of snd compiled without support for X.
with working with GUIs for sound editing.

This is an automatic notification regarding your Bug report
which was filed against the snd package:

I'm a strong proponent of TeX/LaTeX, which still remains the best option for
many purposes despite its drawbacks, for example the lack of clear separation
between content and style, the absence of validation as in XML, etc.

Hi,

In my experience (as a math major with cerebral palsy) many disabled
people use LaTeX with an editor to write math(s). I use Emacs and
AUCTeX with YaSnippet, but everything really depends on the specific
person's needs. It's possible to define device specific keymaps in
editors for any special needs one may have. Something based on plain
text like LaTeX or Lout is probably the best place to look since
you'll only need a suitable text editor. You should probably talk to
the user about what (s)he needs before recommending anything specific.

I am happy to announce the release of Vinux 2.1
Leviathan! This is a monstrous hybrid of the Vinux CLI max edition, the
standard GUI edition and a wide range of additional applications including Open
Office 3.0, the Evolution mail client, the Inkscape vector graphics package,
the Scribus desktop publishing tools, the Bluefish webpage editor, the Gambas 2
IDE as well as much more. Obviously not all of these extra tools are accessible
to speech/braille users, but partially sighted users can access them with the
screen magnifier. This is a very large iso (1.7GB) so you will need a
reasonably fast broadband connection to download it. The URL's are:

Vinux CLI 2.1: dna, std and max editions!

I am happy to announce the release of Vinux CLI 2.1 which is now available
in three different versions: The 'dna' version is a minimal Debian system
which only has five additional applications installed: the speakup screenreader
the remastersys installer, the wodim iso burning tool and the aptitude package
manager. It weighs in at just under 200MB and is aimed at advanced users who
want to build their own customised installation and/or distribution from
scratch. The 'std' version is a standard Vinux CLI system with a range of
basic desktop applcations including the lynx internet browser, the nano text
editor, the mutt e-mail client, the midnight commander file manager and the
pdmenu application launcher. This is just under 400MB in size and is aimed at
intermediate users who may want to customise the standard version by adding
extra applications. The 'max' version is a full CD's worth on command line
applications containing as many useful desktop tools and utiliies that I could
find in the Debian repositories. This aimed at users who want a ready made CLI
system with all the bells and whistles! Both the 'std' and max' editions have
the Vinux single character command aliases and a menu system which allows
uers to browse and run installed applications. Entering 'm' will open the menu,
entering 'h' will bring up a help file which lists all of the keyboard
shortcuts and installed applications. These new versions were all built with
the new Vinux build script which is included in the /root folder of each
edition. You can use this to install pre-selected suites of applications or
modify it to build your own customised system. This is also available as a
