Yes that helped, thanks. You could help me even more by trying this:

Reenable the localized-error-pages file and add in your configuration

<Location /error/>
SetHandler none
</Location>

_after_ the <Location /> section that contains the "SetHandler
mod_python" directive.

Suddenly (not after a change in configuration), apache2 fails to start when mod_ssl is enabled. Disabling mod_ssl makes apache2 start, but is not an option in my case.

this works (better):

but when i do:

i get that funky /htdocs error from another bug (#317460). either way,
DirectoryIndex index.foo index.bar ... doesn't "kick in". on another
host, with the same DirectoryIndex, it works fine. It seems like either
PEBKAC or actual s/w error. i've been working on it for 6 hours (4 hours
straight, and 2 now).

Dear Debian Apache Maintainers,

I am currently in the process of replacing a webserver machine running sarge
with apache 1.33, libapache-mod-php4 and phpwiki (the latter from the upstream
tarball, no Debian package). phpwiki interfaces with a remote postgres
database server (also sarge). This setup works fine.

The new machine is also running sarge and has pretty much an identical setup
with one exception: it is running apache2 and libapache2-mod-php4. Everything
is working ok with one excpetion: Every third link or so that is clicked in
phpwiki, the data that apache2 sends has some junk at the front before the
header (and sometimes at the end as well). I attach two examples to illustrate.

I have also loaded a normal website which seems fine and doesn't show this
problem. So maybe it is a php problem rather than an apache2 problem. However,
as I wrote above, the same php version with apache1 works fine.

It would be great if you could look into this. Let me know if there is other
information you require. I can't see anything in the logs as apache2 does not
give an error, but maybe there's a trick to make it more talkative...

This is standard behaviour of Debian packages (because they all call
invoke-rc.d which does not execute "start" commands if the init script is
disabled in the current runlevel).

It may make sense for Apache to deviate from this behaviour. But there is
no chance that this behaviour will be changed in lenny.

I don't see a reason why not to do this. It will need some
coordination when the default Apache config is switched to named
virtual hosts for SSL, but that should be manageable. And I don't
think it will happen before squeeze, anyway.

Hi, Robert Millan just opened bug #558232 for libapache2-mod-gnutls,
which I maintain

I don't see a reason not to include his provided
sites-available/default-tls in the libapache2-mod-gnutls package, but
I'd appreciate some expert advice -

Is this a good idea?

Do you foresee issues with me trying to track sites-available/default
from apache2.2-common, with mod_gnutls customizations, as
sites-available/default-tls in libapache2-mod-gnutls?

Are there some better alternatives?

Same problem here with lenny fully updated. I tried unloading modules
like python, deflate, bw, but still getting the same problem.
Tried changing the apache config, with normal values, extremely low or
high ones, always the same.
It seems to happen randomly, and it doesn't seem to be related with the
number of queries (i checked logs at the exact minute it happens,
there's nothing special, with loglevel debug).

Today I discvored the same issue on my system (ubuntu karmic). Luckily I found this bug report. I removed localized-error-pages from conf.d and it works fine now.

Maybe this is because that apache does not start when system boot.
We disabled it because we need to enter ssl password by hand, so we start it manually.

Edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst
and after a reboot you can test your memory.

Segmentation faults on a system that worked nice before
is probably a hardware memory problem.

Good suggestion. After increasing the virtual memory resource limit
(with ulimit -v) the tests passed just fine. Thanks!

In any case: Do you have some virtual memory limit per process set (I
think this is often the case on vservers)? If yes, try changing the
8192 above to 512.

If you have a per user process limit, you may want to increase that,
too.
