there's no special code in simple-cdd to handle this; it just uses debian-cd's
SPLASHPNG variable, which needs to be exported, for example:

in profiles/SOMEPROFILE.conf:

export SPLASHPNG="$simple_cdd_dir/someimage.png"

where someimage.png is a file in your simple-cdd working dir.

also note: it seems like debian-custom redirects to the blends list now...
should probably start using simple-cdd@... until i manage to
register a new list specifically for simple-cdd.

Hi,
It seems that the last versions of simplecdd don't allow me to specify
a custom splash image. I've been able to solve it editing the iso with
isomaster, but I'd like to use the .conf file like before. Does
anybody know how to fix this?

MySQL preseed auto answer

Hi all,

I'm trying to do my own unattendant installation of Lenny with
simple-CDD and profiles. All work fine but mysql-server password
confirm.. I would like to set up password for mysql automatically like
root password but it's impossible.

I have tried put mysql-server and mysql-server-5.0 packages in preseed
file with "d-i pkgsel/include string..." and in name_profile.packages
file. Inside preseed file I have tried with:

mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server/root_password password xxxxx
mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server/root_password_again password xxxxx

and with

mysql-server mysql-server/root_password password xxxxx
mysql-server mysql-server/root_password_again password xxxxx

and with

d-i mysql-server/root_password password xxxxx
d-i mysql-server/root_password_again password xxxxx

but nothing works.

If I download debconf-utils packages and I do debconf-get-selections
--installer after I install mysql-server and answer to mysql password I
can see that question and answer is the first

mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server/root_password password xxxxx
mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server/root_password_again password xxxxx

This is a bug? Anyone has trying this and solve the problem?

Where to place a custom kernel package?

I am trying to use simple-cdd to build a Debian blend with a custom kernel.

The How-to on the wiki (http://wiki.debian.org/Simple-CDD/Howto) says:

"Build the custom kernel
Add it to the /path/to/localpackages/directory/ and add the package name to the NAME.packages file for your profile."

Could anyone please tell me which directory I should use instead of the /path/to/localpackages/directory?

the simplest explanation is to keep the code simple. rather than hard-coding
simple-cdd-profiles in several places, or working on some sort of exclude
mechanism, it simply treats simple-cdd-profiles like any other udeb.

the preseed is what actually queue's simple-cdd-profiles to be loaded.

the queueing of udebs from postinst (using $p.udebs) is just simple-cdd's
generic mechanism for loading udebs (such as loading the ltsp-client-builder
udeb from the ltsp profile). any udebs already loaded by anna-install (i.e.
simple-cdd-profiles) will simply do nothing.

profiles/*.udebs is also used at CD build time to ensure desired udebs are
available on the CD.

simple-cdd - How to force deb installer to ask for host name

I know how to get the installer to set a host name to a string. But,
when I comment out the line like #d-i netcfg/get_hostname string. No
prompt ever is presented to enter the host name. So, my host name is
unassigned after install. I want a prompt to set the host name during

What Debian does to make itself friendly to reuse

Hello,

I was having a nice conversation with a NM applicant about the DFSG and
how it encourages people to reuse Debian, and this came out:

I see such a page as just a short index, with links to more sources of
information. Like:

- The installer can be [preseeded]
- Configuration of important packages can be [preseeded]
- Many packages support plugging in extra configuration bits in [.d
directories] or via [update-*] scripts
- It is easy to build [customised installer CDs]
- It is easy to build [customised live CDs]
- It is easy to create a [custom Debian mirror]

The point would be to prove that we're the best available distribution
to derive from. More of a techno-marketing page than a documentation
page, although documentation would be readily accessible via links from
that page.

I understand it. So, this is what I think.

Given that the debian-custom mailing list was created for the same
purpose and reason why Blends was born, which is providing a discussion
forum for Debian-based distribution, it's a bit a difficult right now to
take into account those users who started taking the list as a forum for
Debian pimping. Given that this is only a matter of a general more
global naming confusion, I strongly support the outcome of renaming the
list now and redirecting and pointing users who still think it's a forum
for Debian customization to the appropiate mailing list, such as
debian-user (or its localized variations).

If we created a different mailing list for Blends, this would lead us to
have similar discussions (both -user and -custom) on two different
places whereas they certainly belong to a single one (-user).

If by any chance, there's an specific need for a customization talk
mailing list, such a list would have to follow the usual list-creation
procedure as any other new mailing list and the listmasters would
consider it, but as of now, it really makes not much sense to me.

Yes.

No. The main reason for the renaming is that the former name was
missleading and people used the custom list for discussion about things
which was not the original target of the former CDD now Blends effort.
The list was used for discussion about how to customise your private
Debian customisation and things like that. This was perfectly reasonable
and interesting discussion but leaded to endless missunderstandings
especially for newcomers.

So a simple renaming of the list would leave people into this topic
alone and they would not find a reasonable place to discuss these
issues. The perfect solution would be to manually investigate all
the past mails and tag those who are Blends related and move only
these to the new list. I would even spend some time on this issue
if this is technically possible and would not be to complicated.
But IMHO just renaming the list is not a good solution.

Well, we definitely have a loss of information on the new Blends list
but I try to solve this by some links to important threads (if the
chance to take over some mails from the past just is to expensive.

Well, I have considered it several times. From a Blends point of
view it would be a better solution to just to rename the list. But
I'd regard it just unfair against those people who would miss a forum
for the customisation issues.

There is a python module blendstasktools.py which is parsing Packages.gz,
Sources.gz and Translations.gz files to gather the needed information to
build the tasks and bugs pages. This has several constraints because
it takes quite a time to parse all needed Packages files (for all dists
and archs in principle, currently it is done only for sid and i386).
I realised that this would be a very simple task if using UDD - just a
simple select and viola all information is there.

Currently this is not possible with DDTP translation files but I'm currently
busy to inject this information into UDD. The missing piece is that the
translation files are lacking the information about the version of the
package where the translation belongs to. I will meet Michael Bramer this
weekend who promissed to solve this and than in principle a DDTP UDD gatherer
is ready.

This could lead to a 1:1 replacement of the current tasks files.

The next plan is to go on with the following steps:

1. Parse new queue and inject the information we need for the tasks
files into UDD (I wrote 70% of the code which is needed and think
I will finish this until end of March).
This would enable adding a section of the packages in NEW
2. Find a reasonable way to move the content of Blends tasks files
into UDD.
This would add a further layer of abstraction and makes creation
of the tasks and bugs pages even more simple.
3. Inter-Blend relations For instance if science-biology depends
from med-bio resolve the dependencies of med-bio and lilst these
on the science-biology tasks page instead of just med-bio etc.
4. Handling dependencies of libraries save against version changes.
If a library undergoes a version change it is currently not found
by the Blends tools any more. Similarly but perhaps even harder
to handle are packages with explicite version numbers (octave,
posgresql, etc.)
5. If the tasks file contains information about a prospective package
(not yet official Debian package but a DD is working in Vcs on
packaging stuff) this info should be parsed and used for the tasks
pages (and perhaps the Blends UDD information updated accordingly)
6. Implementing Popcon stats (just in UDD) on the tasks pages.
7. Adding information of screenshots.debian.net to tasks pages -
this information is missing in UDD but it could probably easily
added.
8. Implementing a link checker to make sure all information on the
tasks pages is correct. It might be reasonable to check any
link in UDD and let tasks pages simply profit from the verified
links.
9. Adding some usage sugar to the tasks pages
10. Use UDD information to build the debian/control file of the
source package of a blend.
11. Whatever idea you might have in addition.

This is basically my todo list which would take me quite long for
time constraints. If this sounds reasonable to you or somebody else
I would be happy to mentor work on this.

It's my understanding that Debian Pure Blends is the rename of the CDD
project. Is that correct? If it's basically the same thing, I believe
renaming the list would suffice, unless there's an actual reason why to
leave -custom orphaned and unattended.

try to downgrade to the version of "reprepro" in lenny. if that fixes
it, please file a bug against simple-cdd using "reportbug" or follow

problem with simple-cdd 0.3.9

hello,
i'm trying to make simple-cdd work but got no luck so far, the error
is always the same:

after downloading docs and kernel from debian mirror (using
ftp.debian.org but the results are the same whichever mirror i use)
i get

Error parsing /media/samu/tmp//mirror/conf/distributions, line 3, column
16:
A 'UDebComponents'-field is only allowed after a 'Components'-field.

and after that a long list of awk errors and so on; but i think the
problem is that distribution file .

this happens even if i simply launch
build-simple-cdd --profiles-udeb-dist sid

Modifiying that file didn't help at all, the next run gives the same
problem

looks like it's generated by:
"reprepro -V --noskipold update"

i'm using sid if it can help.

see /usr/share/simple-cdd/profiles/vserver.* for an example of how to do it.

try:

i'm not sure if that preseed line works with etch; preseeding kernels was
broken for the etch debian-installer.

there's also the --kernel-packages commandline option, which is the same as
putting kernel_packages in a profiles/*.conf file.

for a list of commandline options, try:

build-simple-cdd --help

most commandline options are configuration variables that can be put in
profiles/*.conf, substituting - for _ (--kernel-packages commandline is
kernel_packages configuration option).

Custom kernel isn't installed when using '--kernel-packages' switch

Hi

When I put my custom kernel in profiles/my-profile.packages, it is
installed along with the official linux-image package.
So two kernels is available in grub menu, but I just want one.

When I remove it from my-profile.packages file and add it by the
'--kernel-packages' switch. I've tried
two forms:

First one, with full path to kernel:

$ build-simple-cdd --dist etch --profile my-profile --local-packages
custom-packages --kernel-packages /path/to/2.6.24-custom_<foo>.deb

And just the name of package:

$ build-simple-cdd --dist etch --profile my-profile --local-packages
custom-packages --kernel-packages 2.6.24-custom
Where the custom kernel package is in 'custom-packages' directory.

Both ways failed.

The custom kernel package is available in CD but d-i doesn't install
it at the target machine.

Any help?

Sure. But do all our package handling tool support DebTags?
Are our users aware of DebTags. (Well I admit they might fail
to find metapackages as well.) So I'd regard DebTags as a very
important technique and joining DebTags information with Blends
techniques is quite high on my todo list.

I perfectly got this information out of your last mail. But IMHO this
is rather a question of terminology. I'd try to find out what might be
helpful for users and IMHO the Blends technique is quite useful. Feel
free to suggest a better terminus than task which fits all needs.

That's fine for this specific case. But my idea is that it is easier
to ask for not by default installed packages on the phone line to your
local admin if you have to ask for a single metapackage rather than a
list of packages. While I share your point that a default machine should
have all needed accessibility features there might be a list of "suggested"
packages or even new packages. In the later case would an apt-get update
be sufficient to include new software if the metapackage was properly
adjusted and net even a phone call would be needed.

Fine.

If you want to follow this idea I'd suggest the following things:

0. Try to convince listmaster to fix bug #514023 and subscribe the
resulting mailing list debian-blends. I see a big need to have
at least one member of the accessibility team lurking on the
Blends list to make sure that we do not trap into the pitfalls
of choosing narrow minded names (like tasks) or just do other
things which are contra productive for your goal.
1. I used your nice classification page [1] to create the stuff
you need to create tasks and bugs pages which are linked here:

You can adjust the informatio in the related SVN

I can add you to the blends team or you can send me a patch.
BTW, thanks to your fine software categorisation page the
creation of the tasks files took me about 15 minutes. IMHO
the result of the tasks and bugs pages is worth this effort.
2. Try to investigate whether something is wrong with your packages.
a) http://blends.alioth.debian.org/accessibility/tasks/console.html
says that these packages do not have a homepage. This is possibly
not true but the control file of the package is lacking the
Homepage field. If you fix the package control information
the tasks page will be fixed after the next cron job run
(twice a day).
b) Consider group maintenance in a common repository - it has
turned out a good means to fix things like missing Homepage
fields, outdated policy versions etc.
c) Fix translations of package descriptions!
You might have noticed that some of the descriptions are
translated. IMHO this is *very* important. Just use the
links for tranlsation or fix translation to get quick
access to the DDTP server.
3. Ask questions if something remains unclear.

BTW, you have a broken link to GNOME Accessibility Project on [1]
The page http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gap/ does not seem to exist.
