a) may break the planned changeset by allowing dpkg to do unwanted actions;
b) is package(libc)-specific and not generic solution, because the action
sequence proposed in the first message of the thread will probably work
flawlessly for almost all other packages, it's only dpkg is "smart" enough to
break the upgrade with no actual reason, and the front-end has no way to
predict it.

Even dak accepts packages because it has quilt installed. Those might then
fail to unpack on the buildds which *don't have* quilt installed in the chroot.
This breaks the assumption from source version 1.0 that everything in the

Dpkg also refuses to install new libc-bin without previous unpacking of new libc6:

You likely can check the list of process (ps auxf) and find out a package
name in sub-process of dpkg-reconfigure.

Please attach the output of "ps auxf" when dpkg-reconfigure is blocked.

dpkg-reconfigure is not part of dpkg but of "debconf". Thus reassigning.
Its maitainers can reassign or clone the bug report to the problematic
package once it's known.

How can I check that? AFAIK dpkg-reconfigure doesn't display what package is being configured, does it?

That package should be fixed, there's nothing dpkg can do. The problem is
probably the unexpected output that debconf is receiving but the
solution might be to fix the package to not call install-info any more.

(Or it's something totally unrelated)

If you would deal them properly and not try to force workaround in
completely different areas to "fix" your bugs, then yes, I would let you
do so. Unfortunately, your responses are rather hinting in the other
direction.

Which you downgraded from RC without proper reasoning, having dpkg
behave unrelieable isn't something that is wanted in a core part of the
system like dpkg. I am writing this with my own hat on but I am quite
confident that this opinion isn't just mine.

The fact that dpkg-source is not strict enough when quilt is installed
is already fixed in git and upcoming dpkg 1.15.5.3. I'll use #558233 to
track this problem. Note the fact that it's chrooted doesn't change
anything here because quilt has been removed from the build-dependency in
this case... while it was available on the build machine.

This bug (557667) will only be used to track the fact that the internal
quilt implementation currently doesn't create the .pc directory used by
quilt.

Even dak accepts packages because it has quilt installed. Those might then
fail to unpack on the buildds which *don't have* quilt installed in the chroot.
This breaks the assumption from source version 1.0 that everything in the
archive can unpack and thus the buildds do not handle it gracefully.

Giving back package crawl_2:0.5.2-1 after failure in unpack stage.

Additionally, sbuild considers failures in unpack stage to be a local
problem (no space, ...) and thus reports this back as error to
buildd. After a few errors, buildd will stop working to give the admin
time to repair the (obviously...) broken chroot.

So, as a result, this bug leads to sleeping buildds. Great. Now fix it.

That seems to me to be an obvious enough indication that order is not
the correct one. There's a small window of time were the stuff previously
in libc6 and now in libc-bin is not going to be present on the file
system. And one of the point of the Breaks (instead of a Conflicts) is
precisely to avoid the need of removing a package on this kind of
situation!

Hi,

We would like to allow people to prepare their packages for
cross-compiling. Most functionality is already in place, however we are
still lacking a way to distinguish between build dependencies that are
required as tools (e.g. debhelper) or for building a tool (e.g. zlib-dev
for building a jar archiver which is then used to build a JAR file), and
build dependencies required for linking (e.g. zlib-dev for building a
java interpreter which can then unpack the JAR file).

The multiarch specification solves this to some extent, as tools are
marked "Multi-Arch: foreign" and libraries "Multi-Arch: same", which
allows us to have reasonable defaults by requiring "foreign" packages to
be installed in working order (i.e. preferentially DEB_BUILD_ARCH, but
any working one will do) and "same" packages in the version required for
linking (i.e. DEB_HOST_ARCH).

The cases not handled by the multi-arch specification are:

- A library package (M-A: same) is to be installed for DEB_BUILD_ARCH.
- A hybrid package (M-A: allowed) is to be installed for
DEB_BUILD_ARCH.
- A hybrid package (M-A: allowed) is to be installed for any
architecture.

The last case is somewhat implied in the original specification (":any"
qualifier in Depends lines), but never explicitly allowed for
Build-Depends; the others require introducing a new qualifier that is
only meaningful in build dependencies.

In phase one, which needs to happen before the squeeze release for this
to be useful, it would therefore be good if ":any" and ":native"
qualifiers in build dependencies were accepted. As Debian itself does
not yet cross-compile packages, actually supporting the specified
resolution is optional (but would be nice to have in
dpkg-checkbuilddeps).

A minimal implementation would accept those qualifiers in all tools that
handle Build-Depends fields, but interpret the field as if the
qualifiers were not present (thus falling back to the strictest possible
interpretation for a native build).

A full implementation would resolve the dependencies according to the
table on the specification page[1].

It's no decision, it's a fact that the resolution of this is hindering
switching the 3.0 (quilt) format on by default, I don't know what this
has to do with any "deciding".

dpkg won't be able to make package "no more lead to FTBFS at all",
there will always be areas out of the scope of dpkg that lead to
FTBFSes. Or you meant something different, but then I have no clue on
what you meant with it.

Sorry, but you said yourself, don't sweat on sbuild too much. Actually,
having sbuild "fixed" would be a workaround for the core problem, and
won't solve that dpkg is behaving differently with quilt installed or
not. But I'm repeating myself and will refrain from iterating this
discussion again in case you don't bring up anything new.

You are aware that dpkg is most probably the most central tool for
Debian (and its derivates) and actually it is crucial that it behaves in
a clear defined way and not differently depending on other packages
installed or not. The current situation isn't giving this, and that
alone should be reason enough against this format as default.

If that works in a relieable way and dpkg won't behave differently when
quilt is installed or when it is not installed then that might be called
a solution to the situation, indeed.

The remark is serious, I committed changes so that when dpkg calls quilt
it will behave as strictly as the internal dpkg-source implementation. So
you will no longer have FTBFS due to fuzzy patches. It will fail to build
the source package on the maintainer machine directly (until he refreshes
the patches).

The only remaining known problem is the one you where you unpack without
quilt and try to use quilt afterwards. And this one doesn't have to wait
that this bug is fixed but that all buildd use an sbuild recent enough
so that the source package is extracted in the build environment (so
build-depending on quilt is enough to ensure that it's properly unpacked).
