Hello Emeric,

as a GNOME ia64 user for about 5 years, I recall the constant crashes
of Nautilus, but the version was certainly lower than that you are
talking about. It was on my zx2000 machine with sarge and symptoms
included regular crashes each time I changed the default application to
open a file and sometimes it happened after working with checkboxes
that do the same job as chattr and similar commands. Now I'm running
etch on this machine and it seems that the problem was fixed but not
completely, because my Nautilus crashes about 2-3 times a week without
any visible reason, which is more frequently than one may consider
normal for x86 machines :)

Unfortunately, I'm far from being experienced in this topic and would
appreciate any help in getting itanium GUIs stable :)

GNOME desktop status on Debian IA-64

Hi,

Are there people running Itanium workstations with the GNOME desktop environment out there?

I'm experiencing several problems with my daily-updated Debian Squeeze installation.

The most "serious" is Debian bug #537572 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=537572) that I initially reported against GNOME 2.24. The switch to GNOME 2.26 didn't solve anything. GNOME 2.28 packages are progressively delivered to Debian Squeeze and I don't see improvements. I don't even know whether this problem is IA-64 specific, affects all 64-bit architectures or all architectures. Any hint?

I've also noticed that all the applications of the gnome-system-tools package are badly crashing. Try to configure e.g. the date and time with the appropriate tool in System/Administration (or invoking time-admin in a terminal) and you'll see what I mean. This problem was already there with gnome-system-tools 2.22. Current gnome-system-tools 2.28.1-1 still has this problem.

Altering the preferences of the Nautilus browser by clicking on the Edit/Preferences menu makes Nautilus crash. This is with current nautilus 2.26.3-1 package and may be related to bug #537572.

Am I the only one experiencing these issues?

Are you aware of other GNOME IA-64 specific problems?

I would like to know your opinion on Debian bug #546655 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=546655).

In message #30 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=546655#30), Julien advises me to post on the dri-devel list but he's not fully certain that my problem is due to a kernel bug or not.

So, before posting on the dri-devel list, are there kernel people or IA-64 gurus subscribed to this list who could confirm this is a problem with DRI or not? I would like to avoid cross-posting on the dri-devel and linux-kernel lists if one or the other part isn't involved.

any objections from port maintainers to make gcc-4.4 the default?

Besides the open license issue, are there any objections from port maintainers
to make GCC-4.4 the default?

As a first step that would be a change of the default for C, C++, ObjC, ObjC++
and Fortran.

I'm not sure about Java, which show some regressions compared to 4.3. Otoh it's
not amymore the default java compiler for all architectures except hurd(?),
kfreebsd(?) and hppa. hppa already defaults to 4.4, what about the hurd and
kfreebsd?

Ada will still stay at 4.3 until Ludovic is ready to switch the default to 4.4.

this question was not answered yet (and I’m not sure if it was directed
to the release team, the haskell team or the ia64 guys). I’d be in favor
of that step. It would make

give better hints as to what is to do besides waiting for ghc6 on ia64.

You want the x86_64 or amd64 version for that cpu.

debian-502a-ia64-netinstal cd on Intel Dual Core CPU Dell laptop

Hi,
Can someone put me wise on whether the above cd will install on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop with Intel dual core CPU. I have tried but the CD does not boot. But I have been able to install the i386 version of Debian.
However, would like ia64 version, if possible.

ia64 port plans for the squeeze cycle

Heya,

As announced on dda [RT1], we want to get an impression when releasing
Squeeze is feasible. We have proposed a (quite ambitious) freeze in December
2009, and some developers have noted that their planned changes wouldn't be
possible in this time frame. So, to find out when releasing would work for
most people, it would be great if you could answer the following questions:

Do you have any big changes planned? How much time would they take, and
what consequences are there for the rest of the project?

How many "big" transitions will the upcoming changes cause? When should those
happen? Can we do something to make them easier?

You probably need to also enable cpu hotplug.

make-kpkg remove CONFIG_KEXEC=y

Hi,

This is my very first post, hope I registred to the right list. If not accept my apologies, and I will unsuscribe.

I got a fresh install on an itanium machine, latest debian 2.6.26-2.mckinley.

I then pull the kernel source code i.e apt-get install kernel-packages fakeroot etc...
then the src apt-get install linus-source-2.6.26

I then do the make-kpkg clean ; make menuconfig.

At this point I got no option to gen in KEXEC then only thing I could select is compile kernel with debug info (for KDUMP purpose later...)

So I thought I could setup CONFIG_KEXEC=y in the .config file but when I do
fakeroot make_kpkg --initrd kernel_image the CONFIG_EXEC=y is removed from my .config and then the generated kernel don't support kexec.

How could I proceed, should I install an 'unstable' my netdist install didn't poposed choice I just do netboot then install what I guess is the latest.

I need KEXEC as a first step, then I need to get KDUMP working.

EGLIBC: help on ia64 optimized math library

Hi,

I have filled a bug upstream sometimes ago [1] about the ia64 optimized
math library. According to the new POSIX version, some errno values have
changes for some cases. The generic math code has been updated upstream
as well as the testsuite. Unfortunately it has not been updated on ia64.

It would be nice if someone can have a look. The current snapshot of
eglibc 2.10 is available on [2].

dv6t is not Itanium. You want the amd64 install CD.

Friend, you do not have an itanium/ia64 system, you have an amd64/x86-64/em64t system. You've got the wrong CD image for your computer. From http://www.debian.org/ports/ :

IA-64 (ia64)

First officially released with Debian 3.0. This is a port to Intel's first 64-bit architecture. Note: this should not be confused with the latest Intel 64-bit extensions for Pentium 4 and Celeron processors, called EM64T; for these, see the AMD64 port.

You don't have an Itanium/ia64 machine - there's no such thing as an
Itanium notebook. Try the i386 port.

Unable to start Eclipse

I'm getting this with daily updated Debian "Squeeze" Testing.
The value following -exitdata changes from startup to startup.
I've tried to use the Eclipse non-gcj packages without a success.
I've also tried to run Eclipse with openjdk. Same problem.

Is there anybody out there successfully running Eclipse on his/her Itanium workstation?

Can't start the GNOME settings daemon

Hi,

Are there known problems with the GNOME settings daemon on ia64 (and maybe other architectures too)? I can't find a valid recent entry in the Debian bug tracking system.

I'm running daily-updated Debian Squeeze on my hp workstation zx6000, and it seems that gnome-settings-daemon can't be started properly (don't know how to output debug informations while trying to manually restart it on command line).
Furthermore, I've also noticed that the NetworkManager tray icon always says that I've no networking connection.
And the sound volume manager doesn't remember my settings.
I tried a fresh reinstall of Debian Squeeze on a separate harddisk the passed night. Same problem.

Is this because GNOME is currently somewhere between 2.24 and 2.26 on Debian Squeeze?

Debian should run fine on an rx6600 (as noted in the subject line.) As a
general rule, you should make sure you are on the latest firmware prior
to installation.
