Sorry for missing the earlier ping.

Chen-Tse is doing good work for the svm package. He has not packaged it from
scratch but adopted the package. I nevertheless had sufficient opportunity to
see that he cares to do things right and he asks when in doubt.

As you have sadly experienced, having him accepted as a maintainer, i.e.
removing me from the sponsoring loop, sometimes helps to get things done quickly.

I endorse Alessio's application as well. I had the opportunity to review
his packaging in ubuntu, where all packages were technically fine. I
recently sponsored his first package in the Debian Multimedia Team, and
I think he would be a great addition to both our team and Debian.

I knew Georges because of his work in Ofset (www.ofset.org). For many
years he has been maintaining several Debian packages of applications
mainly to be used in education. First keeping the Ofset repository and
later maintaining these packages in Debian he has always done a great
job, with applications that were not easy to package, as Wims. I've
sponsored some of his packages and I've checked his work is smart and
precise.
Also, he's a free software advocate. He uses to travel around the world
to give talks about the use of free software, and specially about the
use of free software in education.

He's maintaining several packages related to science and education: wims

Is there a reason why Balint is not already a DM with DM-Upload-Approved
for wireshark?

My suggestion, just after reading your mail and having a quick look
around[1], would be to get DM right away, then apply for DD as soon as a
steady need arises for more.

Examples of "more" are, for example, reviewing uploads for other
people's packages, packaging new software from scratch, getting NMUs
sponsored.

While one can go through NM without ever having done any of that before,
and people have done so and are now excellent DDs, in my experience it
may be worth getting DM and joining NM after some months of getting more
involved, having a quick and fun NM, rather than joining NM early and
then spending boring months looking up answers for questions about
things one has not yet heard of, or does not yet care about.

At the moment I will consider this a mistargeted advocacy for DM. Please
let me know if I'm wrong, or otherwise please advise Balint to follow
the procedure at http://wiki.debian.org/Maintainers#BecomingaDebianMaintainer

patch sent in april 2008 to fix #475540 on Erlang. The links on

Hi,
I advocate Laurent's application. I have worked with him on the virt-*
packages during the last couple of months. He did a great job of keeping
the tools and libraries up to date, fixing bugs and improving policy
conformance. Every time he told me that a package would be ready for
upload this was indeed the case so I do trust his judgement on this.

During his work on these packages he interacted nicely with upstream
forwarding bug reports and cherry picking fixes.

2. Background
-------------
Applicant writes:

I'm a Romanian which moved to Zürich, Switzerland a few years ago. I've
been working as a sysadmin for the past ~10 years (and as a programmer
for a short while), all the time being lucky enough to be able to use
Open Source both at work and, of course, at home.

I received a CD with GNU/Linux around 1997 (Slackware), fell in love
with its flexibility, then went on to RedHat and stayed with it until
the focus on desktop and the changes in its direction made me look for
both a more open and also a server-geared solution; I was fortunate
enough to meet Debian (~2002, IIRC) which works well on both servers and
clients, and matches better with my principles; thus, I switched to it
and since around 2003 I tried to do a couple of small contributions to
Debian by packaging software.

Currently, my main interest is in continuing to maintain the packages I
am (co)maintainer for, and to try and contribute meaningfully to the
mailing list discussions. I want to contribute my time because I like
the principles that Debian is based upon, and because I want to give
back at least the little I can to the project. Not last is the fact that
yes, I'm amazed by the Debian project itself, its open and
volunteer-based nature and what it manages to accomplish.

3. Philosophy and Procedures
-----------------------------
Iustin has a good understanding of Debian's philosophy and procedures
and answered all my questions about the social contract,
DFSG, BTS, etc. in a good way. Iustin committed to uphold the SC and DFSG
in his Debian work and accepts the DMUP.

4. Tasks and Skills
-------------------
Iustin has a good understanding of the technical side of Debian.
Iustin is maintainer of several packages related to the ganeti
virtualization infrastructure (sponsored by Guido Trotter) and Python
libraries (sponsored by various Python folks); overview is at

All packages are in good shape.
Iustin also answered my other questions regarding T&S without problems
and provided patches for RC bugs, which I've uploaded as DELAYED
NMUs.

5. Recommendation
-----------------
I recommend to accept Iustin as a Debian Developer.

I endorse Nicolas Valcarcel's application[1] to become a Debian
Maintainer.

I am familiar with Nicolas's packaging work, and I've been impressed
with how closely he follows his upstreams. I think this is a very
important part of a maintainer's job. In addition, I've found Nicolas
to be responsible and very easy to get along with.

I hereby support the intention of Pietro to become a Debian Maintainer.

I've sponsored for him a package maintained by him, as well as a QA
upload on a package he was not maintaining but still he was interested
to have it fixed in Debian.

Even though I have not been a regular sponsor for him (just a couple of
sponsored upload thus far), I've found him technically prepared on
Debian maintenance tools, well versed and open minded in technical
discussions, and ready/eager to know about tools and other aspects he
was missing.

Advocating Nicolas Valcarcel

I endorse Nicolas Valcarcel's application to become a Debian

I've been working with him on the augeas package and he's been doing a
very good job in promptly updating the package after new upstream
releases, and in quickly addressing all the bugs that were reported, to

I should also have Arne Goetje sign. I used to have lots of signs on
my later keys, but in order to improve security I decided to upgrade
it, but the downfacts are the lost of signatures that I might get back
last time I meet with Debian people. But it should not be a problem,
as I only need one DD sign and I have it :-)

I join to AM's recommendation. I am the initiator of the mumble package
in Debian and Thorvald also helped me out, a lot. He fixed bugs,
packaging issues etc. quite fast in the upstream source and a short time
after that he also joined the pkg-voip team to co-maintain the package.

He is doing his job realy good and is also helpful for the reverse
dependencies of mumble, like libspeex, celt and other ones.
