clamav .95.3 for Etch

Hello all,

Just trying to figure out if clamav .95.3 is available for Etch or not
through volatile. I added the repo and only see .95.2 and see this
thread, but its old -
http://lists.debian.org/debian-volatile/2008/05/msg00026.html. Figured

Hi all !

Jbidwatcher is a useful tool to monitor and bid on ebay. It used to be in the
main archive, section contrib.

It was remove for two reasons:
* first, the software was too dependent to ebay's website layout, so it could
break easily, and that's what hapenned right before it was removed.
* second, upstream's is not happy to see its software being sold on ebay
under a new name, so he changed its licence to a derivative of the CC-BY-SA,
which basically says "no to commercial use".

However, the package is still actively maintained and works well with the
latest version. Hence, I was considering pushing it to volatile, under the
non-free section.

I have prepared a package, you can find the diff attached, it is basically the
previous package updated with the latest version.

I have looked at the difference rules for uploading to volatile, it seems to me
that this package should fit.

Please let me known what you think.

Yes, I did.

I also use cclive, but they lack some features that youtube-dl provide
and, in fact, even youtube-dl doesn't have some of the features that I
would like to it to have, but I'll implement them in due time.

Yes, I am willing to support youtube-dl on volatile. I just read the
instructions on http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-volatile/ and I think
that I'm ready to go.

well, as you ranted on the list.

I personally can't care less about non-free packages. But as the priority
are our users, I guess we can add it. I don't want to wade through copyright
stuff, but luckily it's accepted into the official archive, so I guess we
could rely on that. Let's assume that mirror admins are ok with them
redistributing it, as redistribution is no legal problem.

Autobuilding is currently broken, though.

the volatile mirror on ftp.de is outdated. I suppose because it pulls from
durin instead of the normal infrastructure. Could you please look into that?

You will need to install the non-free libclamunrar6, which is not yet in
volatile. See [1] for some information on that topic. Unfortunately,
the debian-volatile teams seems to be very busy and unable to reply.

Procedures for _updated_ packages

Dear volatile-team,

I'm sort of confused about current procedures for uploads to volatile. I was
used to just upload clamav to volatile as it was an update only, and not a new
package, and I feel this worked fine a while ago. Now that recent upload of
clamav never made it to our users, apparently because of a missing update
announcement text. Reviewing the guidelines given at [1] again and again I still
think these only apply for packages that are NEW to volatile!?

Could somebody please help me clarify this? Meanwhile I'll prepare an update
announcement and find someone to send it to. The list doesn't seem to be the
right place.

lenny-proposed-updates/volatile, not in the main volatile archive. I

don't know why they haven't been moved in yet, but unless someone forgot

about it, there's a reason for it.

OK. I will bit. Samba is the Linux implementation of the SMB / CIFS
protocol. Since it started back in the day of SMB it got nick named
samba and the name has stuck. Just link Linux is Linus Unix shorted.
Samba fully implements CIFS and SMB2 the crazy system built into windows
Vista.

Hi,
What i understand that clamav is command line virus scanner with a
milter & daemon. Database can be updated from clamav site.It is true
that it can scan other drive/device(windows) also, but all manually.I
don't know about linux virus.Clamav Database is how far updated/useful &
What viruses from both windows & linux can be cleaned are not known.
What about discontinuation/replacement of clamav by debian?
Also volatile should be included in section "origin" of Synaptic pkg.
chkrootkit may be included in volatile for regular update, if any.

No need. I got the answer already.
I'm unsubscribed from all other lists because I stopped using Debian
long time ago. From volatile list somehow I didn't unsubscribe yet. Must
be people don't post here so often and I didn't notice I'm still subscribed.

Clamav purpuse it to catch windows viruses as they pass though the
system. It is mainly used to scan emails and to scan file shares. I
personally use it to scan emails for the most part. I believe there
have been about 600 total virus for Linux and that includes the concept
ones. I have only heard of two actually Virus attacks amide at linux
and both of those were years ago. Most attacks on Linux aren't
virus/warms but manual / automated attacks and you main defense against
those are firewalls and keeping your system up to date.

Ah OK I see. People cleaning viruses from Windows system while they are
running ClamAV on Linux :) Very interesting.

That Linux malwares are weak then, if you can clean them up without
on-access scanning.

Guess it's not the case with rootkits, for example. But personally I
never had an issue with viruses or anything, on Linux. At least I didn't
notice anything like that so far. But had a problem with them so many
times on Windows.

Didn't see that module before. If it is available, is it free?

well, clamav is already in debian (for some years). The version released
with lenny is 0.94.dfsg.2-1lenny2 (0.94 is currently unsupported afaik) and
there's 0.95.2+dfsg-1~volatile1 in volatile.

I use it prevent myself from receiving viruses or other malware.

Bit of a thread hijack going on here but I'll bite. In my experience people tend to use ClamAV on Linux mostly to defend against viruses getting on their Windows systems, for example on a mail gateway or web proxy. That way ClamAV can stop the viruses it knows about from ever getting to the Windows machines in the first place.

ClamAV also picks up a few Linux malware as well, and I'm pretty sure I've seen an on-access scanning module that plugs into ClamAV as well, but I've never used that functionality.
