Thanks for the information. As a matter of fact I installed debian 5.0.3 last night with the first dvd last night and everything is working out just fine. I have a broadband internet connection, so I was able to download enough packages to get me started. Thanks again.

FYI:

It is not uncommon to have such defects on some cheap CD/DVD or CD/DVD-R
but they tends to be quite robust for data reading. If you can mount
and use these CD, they may be usable and issue is just cosmetic one.

If you have good nework connection, you probably need first CD only to
install. That is another angle to your situation.

You can use isoinfo to get the number of blocks, then
use a combination of dd and md5sum to check if the checksum
matches.

Something along those lines:

$ isoinfo -d -i $MEDIA_DEVICE

You will see two line like:

Logical block size is: 2048
Volume size is: 123456

Then

$ dd bs=2048 count=123456 if=$MEDIA_DEVICE |md5sum

You can find more examples and scripts to do that if
you look for some articles on Internet. :)

I believe your browser is sending
header 'Accept-Language: es' or 'Accept-Language: es-AR' as higher quality.

I guess the check will work for iso files only - not burned discs.

Possible bug in the spanish translation of the site

There seems to be a problem while trying to browse debian.org in english from a computer located in an spanish speaking country. In my case, when entering debian.org from Argentina, I am automatically directed to the spanish-translated homepage. After scrolling down and choosing the english version (which redirects me to http://www.debian.com/index.en.html) I can visualize the english version, but when clicking on some links (most of them, actually) I am directed to the spanish version of such link. In some cases I can still access the english version by clicking the english option in the bottom of the page (same as the homepage.) The problems appears to be in the linking, since I have been able to locate some of the files by guessing its english-version name and typing it in the navigation bar.

Would it be to much to ask to replace the single "amd64" with "amd64 /
Intel EM64-T" (or however it's called) on the webpages? That might
reduce the "your ia64 image doesn't boot on my intel box" complaints.

I have no powerpc in my sources.list, and package names don't carry
powerpc for me neither.

On the other hand, enabling users to learn isn't a bad thing in itself.
If it is additional, we shouldn't depend too much on educating our users
- offering it is enough.

One suggestion that is pretty easy to implement and also should be
helpful straight ahead: Why not make amd64 and i386 appear in *bold*
letters? That way they stand out and people are more likely to
recoginize and choose them. Ordering and discussions on renaming one way
or another might confuse, having it clearly standing out is a concept
that everyone should easy be able to understand.

You can afterwards continue to discuss wether allcaps or lowercase or
the arch part from the package filename is the best option. ;)

Changing things this way still does not make it fit in the current layout
of the page and will still reduce readability (IMO).

Also, making this change *only* for the image links is IMO not a good idea
because it just introduces yet another identification for architectures.
We already use too many different names and descriptions in different
places.

I would prefer a full redesign over just changing the layout. The current
pages are problematic exactly because they try to fit everything on a
single page and thus allow little room for explanation.
But OTOH that's also their great strength for users who *do* know what they
want, so solving the issue by linking to separate page(s) that add a good
explanation of what's what is still an option too.

An alternative could be to have a single page per release per architecture.
Such pages would allow for much more information about the architecture
(including links to related architectures) and more information about the
different images.

I hadn't realised that Simon had made this change. That was the whole
_point_. Put the popular architectures first, and call them something
meaningful, ie:

[x86 32-bit] [x86 64-bit] [PowerPC]

The exact names are debatable of course, but expecting people to deduce
that 'amd64' is the right link to click on for their shiny new Intel
Xeon system clearly isn't working.

In the case you are not satisfied (CD not refund), you can send the
feedback to this list, since we don't want to list CD vendors who are

get the rest of packages using apt-get / Synaptic through Internet
connection.

4th Disc is has crack in it

Hi there:

I ordered Debian 5.03 through the vendor Linux collections.com and the 4th disc has a crack in it. So, I would like my money back, but in this case do I contact the vendor for a refund or do I contact you guys? The reason I ask is simply because this is the first time I have ordered any media with Linux on them. Thank you for you response.

All images linked from that page are daily-built testing images. Stable
only gets new images on point releases (5.0.2, 5.0.3, ...) ;)

The page however could be better written, how about creating a patch
against the .wml source?

I ever wonder if a table with a line per arch, and a media per columb
would not be more appropriate.

This list debian-www stand for *Debian* *website* :-)

Though Ubuntu is based on Debian, refer to http://packages.ubuntu.com/
and ubuntu lists/forums for technical questions about Ubuntu.

Or you can install Debian from
http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/debian-installer/ and install the
right module
http://packages.debian.org/search?suite=default§ion=all&arch=any&searchon=all&keywords=spca5xx

Hello,
I tried to download the dricer spca5xx to use my webcam Creative Live
Notebook (vf0470) but it doesn't work. There appears error on your
website and the comment that the package in this suite isn't available.
Can you give me further help how I can make the camera to work with
ubuntu?
I'm completly new using linux. Would be very pleasure for your help!

Le jeu se présente de la manière suivante :

Le joueur répond à 1 des 3 questions concernant Las Vegas et remplit le formulaire d’inscription sur www.las-vegas-invest.com/jeu.

Article 5 : DESIGNATION DU GAGNANT

Le tirage au sort sera fait par un programme informatique qui fera une recherche aléatoire d’un participant parmi tous.

Aucune liste du gagnant ne sera communiquée par téléphone ou par écrit.
Le gagnant sera prévenu individuellement par téléphone à la fin du jeu.

Article 6 : NOMBRE DE PARTICIPATIONS AUTORISEES

Le participant doit obligatoirement saisir tous les champs du formulaire nécessaires à son inscription et aller sur le bouton "valider". Toute inscription incomplète ou inexacte ne sera pas prise en compte et entraînera la nullité de la participation.

Article 7 : DOTATIONS

Ce jeu est doté de : un aller retour Papeete/Las Vegas pour 2 personnes ainsi que de 2 nuits d'Hotel au Wynn's.

Les 2 titres de transport A/R composant un lot pour 2 personnes devront être réservés et utilisés sur les mêmes vols. Ces titres de transport doivent être utilisés par le « couple gagnant » uniquement et sont soumis à des conditions particulières.

Seuls les coûts de transport et d'hébergement sont pris en charge. Les taxes d’aéroport sont à la charge des gagnants. Tous autres frais engagés par les gagnants restent à leur charge. Aucun changement de date de réservation ne sera accepté après l’émission des billets. Les billets gagnants sont exclus de tout programme promotionnel.

The link is not dead, the problem is that the domain is in the process
of being renewed. We missed the date and our domain provider put it in
redemption mode. I expect to fix that problem tomorrow.
