disappearing desktopRunning Hardy with the latest updates. I had the terminal launcher and a
number of documents on the desktop. When I booted just now the desktop was blank. Just the wallpaper. The launcher and docs are still in the ~/Desktop directory. Also, right clicking on the desktop fails to bring up the create doc popup. Rebooting doesn't help. The only change was to run the update manager this morning. It showed some backport updates that I went ahead and installed. I would try backing them off if I knew how and could remember what they were. Any help appreciated. -- Bob Holtzman AF9D 8760 0CFA F95A 6C77 E125 BF90 580F 8D54 9279 "If you think you're getting free lunch, check the price of the beer" -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@... Since I never use it I purged the app and rebooted. No joy. No icons. Still a blank desktop with only the wallpaper. My knotes stickies are still there, however. Also I forgot to mention dragging icons from the drop down menu to the desktop doesn't work anymore. Any other ideas other than reinstalling from the backup I ran yesterday? You most likely have a messed up config file. Running /usr/bin/nautilus restores the icons but doesn't persist through a reboot. I'd love to know what file got corrupted. Barring that, I think the command needs to be put into a startup file, one of the init files or perhaps ~/.bashrc. Sound reasonable? If so, which and what syntax? -- Bob Holtzman AF9D 8760 0CFA F95A 6C77 E125 BF90 580F 8D54 9279 "If you think you're getting free lunch, check the price of the beer" -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@... If so, > which and what syntax? > Until you figure out the problem, you can create a new panel item (I'd generally recommend a desktop icon/item, but that wouldn't help much in this case) for 'nautilus'). Right click a blank spot on the panel you choose and click 'Add to panel'. Once opened, select 'Custom Application Launcher'|Add - Type: Application Name: <Nautilus> Command: /usr/bin/nautilus That way, when your icons are not showing up, you can single click the Nautilus icon on the panel bring them up. As a side note: I have been struggling with a similar issue on a single machine; on occassion my gnome-panel applets won't load properly, so I've had to create a 'killall gnome-panel' icon on the desktop to get the panels to reload the icons. I'm pretty sure that this is caused by a bonobo race condition, but so far I've not been able to pin down the cause. -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@...
