Hi all,

for the kde on windows master server (www.winkde.org) there is a
download statistics available (unfortunally not for the kde mirror
servers).
From the Oktober 2009 statistics there are some exiting results:

- There are about 30.000 files downloaded every day from the master
server (average value, peak value up to 53000 files)

- The downloads were fetched from about 47.000 different sites

- There are currently 64 mirrors online worldwide with - extrapolated -
more than one million downloaded files per day.

- The installer is downloaded about 100.000 times every month.

The top most downloaded packages are (in download order):

kdebase-workspace
kdebase-apps
digikam
kdeedu
kdenetwork
kate
kdeutils
okular
kdegames
koffice
gwenview
kdepim
umbrello

That the workspace package is downloaded on top may be an indicator that
KDE windows user like to have KDE desktop support on windows.

Are there other/additional interpretations available ?

Regards
 Ralf

(I think they will download a lot less because the are not the master site.)

Cool, so it basically matches the current ftp.gpg4win.org download rate.
A pleasant surprise!

I somehow distrust that interpretation, my guess is that something in there
will make people download it with a less understanding what this really would
mean.

Given that we have so many downloads, we might think about how collect more
feedback from users. The problem seems similiar to Gpg4win were we also
believe we do not know enough about our (potential) users and we lack more
feedback in general. Note that KDE on windows might be in a similiar
situation as outlined for the contributor structure in this paper (from
2006):  http://gpg4win.org/ShortStudy-Sustainable-FS-example-Gpg4win.html .
Gpg4win has lot of users and just a few core developers.
With KDE on windows I guess we will have a little less real users,
but more on the rest of the pyramid.

Best,
Bernhard

There are some more numbers to get a more real impressions of the numbers:

1. The list of mirrors are fetched 43045 times  (by counting the
download number of mirror.list from winkde.org)
2. people selected releases **9297 times from www.winkde.org (by
counting the number of fetched config.txt files)
3. from this 9297 times there are
     3.1. 473 nightly release selection
     3.2. 8621 stable release selection
     3.3. 85 unstable release selection

from 1. and 2. we can calculate the number of release selections outside
winkde.org, which is 33748 (= 78%)

With this numbers we can get a better estimate of the lower bound for
downloads from other server

- 78% percent of installations are fetched outside of winkde.org
- from winkde.org there are downloaded 30.000 files a day
-> there are estimated 109.000 files a day from other servers (assuming
people downloads the same packages as from winkde.org)
-> in all there must be a minimum of about 140.000 packages downloaded
from all server,

.. to be continued

 Ralf
