Hi all.

About the proposal I wrote some time ago (quoted below) I've received
Ralf's permission to go ahead with it. So, in a few moments, I'll commit
a patch (the proposal is for trunk only) whose first effects are:
1) Hopefully, everywhere a lang file is needed to be loaded, the paths
for searching the lang files will be <app>/lang/egw_*.lang (new),
<app>/setup/egw_*.lang (still current) and <app>/setup/phpgw_*.lang (old
for backwards compatibility), in this order, winning only the first one
found.
2) Will NOT automatically create the new (<app>/lang/) dir. After the
patch, during this weekend, I should be able to migrate all the apps in
trunk from setup/egw*.lang to lang/egw_*.lang. So, if if between the
commit of the patch and the migration of an app a translator uses the
developer_tools in order to do a translation, this will (try to) go
directly into <app>/lang/egw_XX.lang, so in this case he should create
the lang dir himself and provide write permissions for the webserver.

I'm not 100% sure, but at least because of translation, you can remove
the write permissions for every <app>/setup directory. I'll try to add
in check_setup something about this.

about translation

Hi!

My name is Jonatan and I'm from Slovenia. I volunteer at some non-profit
organization and we have internal small library. Our needs are growing so
we considered to use a program for managing our library - and I find Koha.
So I decided to translate Koha to Slovenian.

But at Koha Pootle there are several projects.
2 Opac and 2 intranet different versions.

Now I don't know which version to translate.
The old one 3.0.x or new one 3.1.x/3.2.

Of course I understand to translate version I intend to use but my question is:

When I choose to upgrade to newer version should I translate it from
begining or translation stays?

Or putting that way: upgrading to a non-translated new version of Koha
means to translate it all over again?

Sorry to reply so late (maybe better late than never).

I need two extra data:
1) What is your egw version?
2) What is the value of the "charset" phrase in phpgwapi? I guess you're
translating norwegian, so, if you didn't change the phrase, it should be
"utf-8". If you changed it, please revert the change.

Encoding bug in translation tools.

I have been translating and retranslating over and over again almost a week now. Finally I have found out what happens... Sometimes the translation tools somehow switches from UTF-8 to ISO-8859 and crashes with a error message when trying to save or update the database. If I save the file too, it is saved with ISO-8859 ecoding. If I manually convert the file from ISO-8859 to UTF-8 I can save the translation and load it up in translation tools, saving & updating the database then usually works. If I do not convert it, the next time I load the same file and press save, all special characters are lost, and translations fail every time I try to enter a special character. I can still save the file, but now it has no special chars from the previous translation and new special chars have strange chars instead. I have to manually convert the file to UTF-8 and retranslate the whole file (adding all the special characters) to get translation of special characters to work again. This is the error message: Database error Invalid SQL: INSERT INTO egw_lang (message_id,app_name,lang,content) VALUES ('%1 contact(s) %2, %3 failed because of insufficent rights !!!','addressbook','no','%1 kontakt(er) %2, %3 feilet p� grunn av manglende rettigheter !!!'): ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0xe52067 HINT: This error can also happen if the byte sequence does not match the encoding expected by the server, which is controlled by "client_encoding".

Thanks István!

That got me started. But now I have a problem with Norwegian special
chars æøå. Any tips on how to write them so that they show correctly?

When I use æ, ø or å they show up as strange chars.

Well, usually it takes up to one week to submit translation patches to
the repository. Then, take that the stable release 1.6 has just been
released, and for a new release to be packaged, it's necessary some kind
of justification, like lots of bug fixes that were breaking some
functionality or a security issue, and changes in a translation don't
justifiy a new packaging. But once your changes have been submitted to
the repository, anybody that uses subversion instead of the packages can
have the changes inmediately. Also, if your changes are submitted and it
happens that some of the "requirements" for a new packaging happen, your
changes will be included. I hope this answers your question.

The strategy is to work in the trunk branch, where everything before a
release is available (regardless other advantages, of course), and you
can have a translation ready before the release (please reread my
previous reply about working online). So, I encouraged people here in
this list about almost two months ago to work on their translations
before the new release is ready. At this time, you can only try to do as
best as possible until the next packaging.

You don't need to take care about the charset for the lang files,
because since some months ago it's forced to be utf-8. Also, you can
translate online, in whose case let me know privately.

Also, if you didn't do it yet (or carefully enough) please take a look
at the different explanations about the translation issues (howto,

Hi, Flavio.

Sorry for not replying before. I took a look and, for some reason, it
looks like an issue in my installation, since in the official site the
feature works. Anyway, after the release, I'd like to commit all changes
and perform a clean checkout of trunk, so I hope that issue gets fixed.

Apart, as surely you all know because it's been announced in the devel
list, the 1.6 will be released this next Tuesday 25th, but the branching
will be tomorrow morning. So please everyone hurry up, because thought
I'll try to delay the commit as much as possible, something might not be
on time.

egw 1.6 rc to be released

an rc for 1.6 is to be released in about two days. It will include the
translations in trunk, so please hurry up those whose translation in

Holidays

I've taken as holidays from 15/08 until 31/08. The first days, until
tomorrow, I'm still available, but from then on, I don't think I can

I think 1.6 PRE is very good chance to "put some more Bulgarian" language in eGroupWare. Some time ago I posted partial translation of phpgwapi (for 1.4 branch) just to test. I am not sure do I follow all the rules for translation upload correctly. I would be happy if I can help with my translation. Please check my upload and let me know if something is not correct.

Preview for 1.6

Hi, all.

As surely all of you following other lists already know, there's a
"preview" for next 1.6. As I understand, "preview" means "a trunk
snapshost of features before the branch is created". This means that, in
order for translations to be ready before the rc (and of course the
final release), it's now a good time to update your translations at my
site so I can commit the changes.

There's no feature freeze, which means there can still be changes, but
that shouldn't stop (re)starting the work.

I've been somehow inactive durling last weeks, partially because there
were no (IMHO) problems and not a lot of free time on my side. I also
have some pending patches in tracker that I hope to close during today
and this weekend.

If anybody wishing to contribute has any problem for access or any other
question, please do so.

Anyway, I'll say that I'll be on holidays since August 18th until the
end of the month, but even so, I hope not to be inactive or unavailable
during that time.

First of all, I want to make sure you read
http://www.egroupware.org/wiki?wikipage=Translation+manager+and+Team
where you'll find the reason why you're experiencing a charset problem.

Then, your case again illustrates the reason of the major change that
was made some months ago (for trunk branch only, which will be taken as
basis for next stable release): force to switch all language files to
use utf-8 charset. Another major (but theorically transparent) is to
migrate all files from phpgw_ prefix to egw_ prefix. But these changes
are still being tested before hardcoding them as necessary, so that's
the reason why, even if using trunk, you're still "having problems" when
not using utf-8. So, the short answer is "please, use utf-8 for your
language files" (this shouldn't change your data in the db).

So, at this time, the guidelines for contributing translating (I'll try
to update the wiki with this) are:

- - Read the wiki page (itself :) )
- - Try to use the current trunk way (i.e., egw_ prefix and utf-8), and an
installation as updated as possible.
- - Try to not bind to 1.4 (released many months ago). I don't know if
there will be some release in the stable branch after 1.4.002, but if
yes, it's very unlikely that new translations are expected at this time
for non-english users, regardless the extra work it is necessary for
porting accordingly.

So please after following these steps, mail me privately for some extra
info that can make your contribution more nice and out of headaches.

Problem with translation

Dear Sirs,

I am very happy to join the translation team of Е-GroupWare. I think this project has great potential and future. I am not very great in software development, so I think this is my way to help. I can contribute in Bulgarian language translation.

I have trouble with translation tools. When I load Bulgarian language i get question marks (?) on already translated phrases (see the enclosed picture). I use charset Windows-1251 (standard for Bulgarian language), this is charset for my database too.

May someone give me a suggestion?

Hi, Manuel.

You're overlooking the version. Since the files are for 1.4, then you
have to search in branches/1.4/ instead of trunk/.
