Hi,
It had been mentioned that the city dwellers quite fancied a trip out to
the shire, potentially for a spot of gardening, sooooo......
.....folks are invited to a gardening party by the Dee on Saturday 17th of
May. In exchange for your blood sweat and tears, we're offering a tasty
vegan noshup, cosy bonfire and an insulated barn for sleeps.

You're welcome to arrive anytime on the Saturday, bus times:
http://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/publictransport/timetables/pdf/201DEESIDESAT280408.pdf

We live a couple of miles beyond Ballater on the north deeside road - the
buses that go as far as Braemar can drop you off a 5 min walk from us.
Ask for the Polhollick suspension bridge (on the left) - if you get lost
or only come as far as Ballater phone and we'll come pick you up. don't
stay on the bus any longer than 5 mins after Ballater. Head down the
track, cross over white suspension foot bridge and you're there.

Be good to know how many folks to expect and if you know what bus you're

The nostalgia of the lost Eden could not be more prominent than in present. In Eden’s myth human chooses exile and loses paradise (and the critical bond with nature…) as a result of a boosted self-esteem… Human “recognises” self-superiority over the whole rest nature (not to mention God, to keep the discussion neutral…). Believe in myths or not, the morale of this story is the same; the concept of human superiority over nature is raised. Human is not anymore a team player and his stance to nature is changed from the “follow” to the “force” dogma. The environmental countdown has started. Human alienates dramatically, suffering and causing suffers, while his attitude is more than biologically irrational, is even self destructing… In our era and with the toy of technological advance on hand, the human-nature drama accelerates. What could be the salvation/solution if these fundamental issues (lasting already some thousand of years) are not resolved?

P.S. Any ideas are more than welcome!! ( after all it’s a share planet )

Dear All,

We've been having very low turn-out at our weekly Sunday evening filmscreenings on campus, and want to know why! If you don't attend and are interested, please let me know why you don't come, what you'd like changed and we can try and change things!

Also if anyone wants to help organise these filmscreenings, please let me know! The idea was to screen films (usually indy films) on ethical/green/activist issues. we could expand to having speakers etc., it's up to what you want!

So get in touch and let me know if you'd like to see any particular films, change time and venue (8pm Sundays, NK11), or can help out!
thanks,
k.

n.b.: This Sunday's filmscreening's been postponed and we'll have it again when the organiser can attend.

Resently we have set up an ‘environmental working group’ under the ‘Welfare’ committee in the Student Assosiation, we the SA to have ‘Environmental and Ethical’ concerns at its core and want this group have a higher priority by making it a Committee in its own right.

Why do we think there should be an Environmental and Ethical committee..

1. Fundimentally because we think ‘environmental and ethical’ concerns are important!
2.	Because at the moment no one in the Student Assosiation is responsible for these ideas, so no one does very much!!
3.	We don’t think the SA comunnicate enough with students about these ideas, and that its very difficult to communicate ideas with them.

4.	At the moment scoieties and individuals can push the SA and the Univerisity to do environmental and ethical things, but this is not enugh, we think they should have an internal group to deal with these problems.
5.	Other Unions have active E and E groups that have achieved lots of great things!!
6.	We think ‘Environmental and Ethical’ concerns should be as important as sport and entertainment and other existing committees.
7.	We think they should join up to ‘e and e’ style awards where the good work that is going on will be rewarded and continued.

If you think we should have an Environmental and Ethical commity then come and vote! We need 250 students to vote for an environmental representative.
Your vote counts!

Where: William Guild, Arts Lecture Theatre
When: Monday 18th February at the AGM, from 6.30pm onwards
What to bring: Yourself, your student ID card, and some chums

See you there!

I think plastic bags have their uses. I mean my kitchen is minute. I don't have a bin I just have hooks. I don't have anywhere I can compost (I live in a multi storey tower block). My last composting expo was homemade manure in the juicer.

But there is another good reason not to use plastic bags on campus. They just kill your arms! I use a shoulder shopping bag and a cotton/hemp bag and with those two I can near enough get all my groceries in for the week. In fact I can't get much more in my ladybird 'granny' trolley. Though sometimes I have to use the trolley.

I think for emergencies if we could get the retailers to use recycled paper bags it would be a lot better. I also think if we could have some Aberdeen Uni hemp bags made that would be good as well as a tourist buy (sorry don't know the word. Need breakkie).

I don't think we should charge for the paper bags because students get fleeced enough. I am shocked how much the costas on campus charge for coffee. I think it would be better if they subsidized fair trade coffee refills for flasks.

Anyhow....need breakkie. WILL GET BREAKKIE.

Jodi asked me to post something on here about them because I use them. Sorry it's been a few days. Been unwell. Anyhow.

I used them because they are small and compact mainly. Ideal for travelling or when you live in 'junkie towers' and the washing machine is on the ground floor! They are also relatively eco friendly and whilst they don't get things whiter than white they are okay. As good as ecover etc and cheap. (I'm still on my first £4 bag 8 months after I got them!)

Links are as follows.

In a soap nut shell
&

Believe you can use an old sock to put them in if you haven't got anything else.

For stubborn stains I use ecover bleach on top but not often do I need to use that. It gets the remains of dinner out fine (I'm a messy eater )

But I know if you order a sample from In a soap nut shell they take ages to come!

In the quest to improve the networks between different 'e and e' style societies we are going to hold a little mini festival just for us!

All groups are invited to this exciting event to promote themselves and have some fun :)

The vague idea is that it will be held in Botanic Gardens / Ephinstone hall (probably a wednesday in early April) and will be an all day event where different groups can have a stall advertising thier society, turning into an everning of music/dance raising money for all groups involved.

Each group that wants to get involved can plan an activity to do, such as becylce, who are planning an all day bike workshop to fix the bikes they have and help anyone who brings a broken bike, or the veg garden who plan to get people to make little paper pots for seeds that people can take away and grow, and maybe bring back to the garden in the summer for the veg garden to grow on1 (and then even come back in the new term and to eat)

This is a great oppurtunity to do something interesting to get more people aware and involved in your group, aswell as meet all the other group and raise some money...

As we all know plastic is very damaging to the environment. At the current rate the world produces 200 million tons of plastic a year. Less the 3.5% is recycled.
Plastics do not biodegrade, they photo degrade, breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil, waterways, oceans and entering the food web when ingested by animals.
Scientists estimate each plastic item could last in the environment anywhere between 400 to 1000 years, so every bit of pastic that was made is still here.. wow.. thats a lot of junk.

So that leads to the question, what are we going to do about it??
The newly formed 'environmental working group' in the SA has a plan to make Campus plastic bag free.
Around the country town and viliages are turing away from plastic bags and promoting reusable and biodegradable bags in a first step to reducing plastics.
Modbury was the first town www.plasticbagfree.com

To progress this idea the environmental group will be holding a talk / video / presentation on alternatives in the New Year, followed by inviting all shops to choose a date for the switch over.

If you want to know more please contact me u01vjp6@abdn.ac.uk

I think that on this Campus plastic bags are greatly unnecessary as most people have a bag on thier backs anyway, and most of the things bought are small, ie a sandwhich a book etc.
What do you think?
Well, do you know what the zoology soc are up to this weekend? Did you know there was an organic veg garden on Campus? Do you have any idea what an environmental working group is and if there is one in this Uni? What does this Uni invest our money in?
This Website aims to collect all this information in one place and thus make it easier for everyone to find out what is going on! Simple..

If you go to the main page and click in the right hand corner 'how to use this webspace' it will tell you just that, at the bottom of the page click on 'page flakes' to get the whold site in a prettier version with a frog :) if you have any questions you can contact us @ envroandeth (at) googlemail.com

We plan to advertise this website first to the different groups on Campus and then to go to different lectures and tell the students about it, currently it is in early days, but 'from small seeds whole communities grow'.
