Some time next week I'll upgrade eureka from Solaris Express snv_81 to
whatever the latest stable OpenSolaris release is. There is no
straight forward upgrade path from SXCE to OpenSolaris, so the machine
will be reinstalled and the data restored from backup.

That means there will be some substancial downtime for people using
services on eureka. More details later.

Another option would be to upgrade to SXCE svn_125, and wait until
Caiman is ready to move to OpenSolaris.  Is there any tempting reason
to make the switch right now?

How do I know if I use services from eureka?

Yes, the mysql service is broken in the current release and I don't
want to spend a lot of time debugging it when we have been talking
a lot about an upgrade for the last month.

And if I make an upgrade I want the time spent getting zfs mirrored
root and a real package system while I'm at it.

If you use pike-related things with "lysator" in the domain name you
are using eureka. If it has "ida" in the domain name it's pelix. The
most relavent notes are that git-services will be down, CVS works as
normal.

In snv_81, snv_125, or both?

Ok.  So that's not really an argument for choosing osol over upgrade
to SXCE snv_125 then.

Note that you can probably use the lu-tools to create a BE to install
the new OS on without needing to resort to restoring from a backup,
but an install from scratch is probably a good idea anyway.

No, it's an argument for upgrade, and while upgrading I'll go for
something with a future.

Going for "something with a futute" will still be possible in that
future though, with less effort (if the Caiman project succeeds with
its goals).  But it's your effort, so I won't try to stop you.  :-)

That got postponed dur to me getting sick during the planned service
window, but there will be another try in an hour or so. This time I'll
split the mirror try and prepare the new OS on the detached
disk in another machine, so there should be very little downtime
today.
