I want to know if I can use subversion if I'm building a .NET application and also if this would be recomended. I now use sourcesafe but I want to explore other options.

Thank you.

Hello Roberto,

I'm a VSS to SVN happy user. I recommend SVN for .Net applications. For Any applications. Currently I have .Net, VB6 and Progress 8 and 9 applications in SVN repositories.

I think in the next week I'll have some old Delphi applications too.

I've got a lot of .Net code in several subversion repositories.  I use the
filesystem and TortoiseSVN to check things in and update the code.  I think
integrated version control in the IDE is overrated because I also mod files
outside of the project which are part of the repository... committing
strictly via the IDE can cause you to miss something, and I'm not overly
keen on storing all my external (but related) files inside the project as
'content'.  There are commercial plugins for integrating subversion into the
visual studio IDE.  I mainly use SharpDevelop instead which has subversion
integration.

To escape the evil sourcesafe, use vss2svn:

We use Subversion for .NET and classic C++/COM applications.

The only problem to note is that VS2003 (and IIRC not VS2005) Web projects have a problem when Subversion uses the .svn for the administration folder name. As of Subversion 1.3, there is support [1] to use a different folder name which avoids the problem.

We use the TortoiseSVN and Subversion command line clients. The AnkhSVN project started up as a Subversion add-in for VS, but seems to be inactive.

You should also evaluate if Microsoft Visual Studio Team System is right for you. It’s far more than a version control system, so it may be more than you need.

We're inactive? News to me: http://cia.navi.cx/stats/project/ankhsvn

I've been caught out thinking the same thing.  It's not very well
advertised... I've been falsely waiting for activity on this too without any
knowledge of new activity.  The only thing I've been glancing at whenever I
visit the ankhsvn page is this phrase here:

"The latest stable release of AnkhSVN was 0.5.5, released on August 17,
2004" - two years ago!

Please update the tigris page to say that the project is in full swing and
point people clearly to the new project location so people aren't misled.

Thanks for the info on this, I'm going to check out any new developments now
because I've been searching for something like this only recently.

+1

Good to know that AnkhSVN is alive and well.

We're still using the tigris.org project site. The front page has been
updated every now and then (linking by default to the snapshots directory,
recommending the snapshots before the 0.5.5 release etc).

I wrote a response to this on my blog yesterday:
