Hi,

In case somebody missed this, Xara Xtreme 5  is out.

Release notes: http://docs.google.com/View?id=ddpdz8pc_0hbjf82hj

Speaking of which, are we cutting a beta any time soon? :)

Well, it would be incredibly helpful if the win32 builds were more regular as well as if we had someone committed to making the win32 installers for the pre-releases. We really need to push the prereleases on the downloads page too.

Cheers,
Josh

One thing that is preying on my mind for a while is whether context
aware scaling could actually work for vector graphics. That is: you
have a complex combined path or a group of object, say, a picture of a
bird. You want its wings to be longer. So you mask body and start
dragging handles of a group selection onto the outside with Shift
pressed.

This has been used for a long time - see all those Affect buttons for
rounded corners, stroke width, etc. All they are different aspects of
"context sensitivity" for transformations.

There is a researcher in Israel that has done a lot of work on this,
specifically in dealing with fonts.  The idea being to have Asian fonts
that don't have as many size scale better.  The results were impressive.
It looks like most of the techniques that he's using could be applied to
vector graphics, but the thing that he doesn't take into account at all
is color.  Which I think adds another dimension to the issue.

I don't remember the name of the guy off hand, but it's the same guy
that did the research behind what eventually became the Liquid Rescale
plugin in GIMP.  I exchanged some e-mails with him, but I think I was
unable to convince him to put a grad student or two on the vector
graphics problem.  I need some grad students :)

If I remember well Adobe just employed  this guy for Photoshop and he
put liquid rescale in CS4 - I read some articles about that, so I
think it will be imposibble from now to convince him on any aspect ;)
... but talking about rescale ( for groups or of individual objects )
- can we get something that in Corel Draw is named Add Perpective ? or
some direct tool equivalent with Envelope.

All those tools in Corel (there I have a long experience that's why I
use word "Corel") do a magnificent job transforming vectors in
relation with escape points or in relation with curves/guides of the
envelope model. Also they don't need to transform text in paths to
apply such an effect - envelope or perspective.

In Inkscape 3D tool - I see rectangles are modified using multiple
escape points - but transformation is linear and applied just for
linear segments.
