Romu started a poll about LZ4linux on official lightcrafts forum.

Unfortunately forum engine is down and noone can register there
(downloading files is also down). This will be solved but not now
(according to my knowledge). I will let You know when things will
change.

Yes, the purpose of the poll is to say : "Hey LZ fellows, we want LZ for
Linux and we're ready to pay for a real  release".

The forum engine is down, but for the ones we are not registered in the
forum, post here your vote and I'll see with the moderator how we can set
these votes.

No big deal, I can edit your poll, including number of votes.

The voting options are:

1 I'd really love a LZ 3 for Linux with possible donations
2 I'm interested in buying a LZ3 release for Linux
3 Not interested

Please specify.

I will buy LZ3 for linux if it is released as a paying software and will
be happy about it. I'll tell all my friends I bought my first linux
piece of software and I'll have a party to celebrate the fact that it's
such an amazing product.

If LZ3 for linux is released with possible donations, I'll definitely
upgrade, I'd be a fool not too.

I prefer this solution.

Well, that was easy enough: I just voted with my wallet.

I'm sorry Dan but I'm not agree with your point.

I donated some months ago, and I'm ready to do it again, and even to pay for
a "real" version. But that also means I don't want to through away my money
by the windows.

Anton was clear enough : there is no information about the survival and the
evolution of LZ for Linux. So what about donation? Donate for what?

So the poll, if we are enough, I'm dreaming we can convince LZ fellows to
maintain this beautiful piece of software for Linux. And if this has to be
done through a real paid version that's not the most horrible thing in the
world.

Romu

PS: Dear Anton, I don't want to become your nightmare, we had some great
exchange in a recent past and I hope we'll continue. I really love LZ.

I'd be happy to pay a reasonable amount for the Linux version of Lightzone.

Am I the only one that isn't interested in purchasing the software?  I
might be willing to donate to the "cause" because I think it's an
awesome product and I use it, but I still have mixed feelings about
using/purchasing linux software that's closed source.  Yes, I am
hypocritical in my view sometimes, but unless someone else can provide
such a seamless and cohesive UI for dealing with RAW pictures that's
open source, I'm still hooked on LZ.

I'm sorry, I don't want to open up a bag of worms... :)  I love LZ,
and it works wonderfully for me.

Thanks,
Noah

I don't know if you are the only one not interested in purchasing LZ.  I
love Linux and I love Open Source and yet I am willing to pay for good
software even if it is closed source.

How many people pay for open source software?  Developers have to eat
too, you know.

Given that I've just spent approx. $200 upgrading my PC to the minimum
requirement for running LZ 2.4, it would be hypocritical and shortsighted
of me if I wasn't then prepared to pay for the software. The price of the
Windows/Mac versions causes a small intake of breath (for example, it's
twice the cost of Bibble Lite), but I've said from day one that if
Lightcrafts decided to charge for LZ, I'd be forced to pay up because
there is nothing comparable in this space on Linux (IMHO).

Those who consider that it should continue to be free because "everything
else is on Linux" should look around and decide if anything of similar
capabilities has yet emerged from the open source world. The GIMP has
been in heavy development for years and *still* lacks 16 bit support and
adjustment layers (although to be fair to the GIMP team, photo-editing
clearly isn't their focus). Krita has those features but again isn't
targeted at photo-editing. Look at other large Linux applications, even
"free" ones - many of them rely in part or in the main on commercial
sponsorship to progress (e.g. Mozilla; OpenOffice.org - and these are
applications that have wider appeal than an image editor). Developing
software to this standard isn't "free", even if you give it away.

>From Lightcraft's point of view, I'm sure the consideration is whether the
potential revenue from a Linux version would be sufficient to cover the
cost of providing paid support, which could easily amount to another FTE
on the payroll. I wouldn't have thought it caused much development
overhead, being written in Java with any Intel-specific code coming from
the Windows version, but there would be support calls to handle, as this
list proves (e.g. Java doesn't run; doesn't work on AMD64; why doesn't
Batch Export do this; etc.).

Therefore, I've just made a nominal donation to Lightcrafts, in
recognition of their efforts to date in making LZ available on Linux for
free. However, I'm not prepared to donate more until there is some clarity
on the future of LZ for Linux. If it becomes a commercial product, then
I'll pay - definitely. If there's a free 3.0 release, I'm prepared to make
a further, more substantial donation - not equivalent to the retail
(supported) price, but comparable with what I paid for Bibble and Vuescan,
two other commercial Linux packages that I felt were worth the money
(though only just in Bibble's case ;-).

Finally, one further thought: given that LZ partly relies on open
source-originated packages such as dcraw and lcms, it is at least fair
that they reciprocate by making the results of their work available to the
community that exists around that software, even if it's in a closed
source, commercial form. I would hate for LZ on Linux to simply stop here
and disappear.

Cheers,
Ade_
