I have bsdcluster.com and bsdcluster.org domain names. They are going
to expire on 29-oct, does anyone want to take them? Otherwise, I'll
let them to expire.

They are free to a good home, if you want them, just let me know and
I'll authorize the transfer and they're yours.

How to install freebsd 8 on raid disk

Hi,

I just bought a raid server,
Here is the current configuration:
"SC318 1ru Supermicro Rackmount server,
Intel 3G HT P4 Cpu, 1gig ddr400 ram,
4x 250Gig Sata2 Hdd in hotswap pull out caddies,
Adaptec 2420sa 128mb sata2 Raid card with latest firmware,
Dual 1 Gig Network ports
Hard Drive's are configurated as 1 hardware Raid5 volume
"
Operating system is FreeBSD 6,4m with FreeNAS installed / configured.

I want to replace it with FreeBSD 8.0.
When system boot up, freebsd 8 detected raid 0 and raid 1.

But when I installed, it said /dev/accdsxxxxx (can't remember the
name) not found.

Then I booted into the current system 6.4 have a looked its dmesg
message, and the shown the following configuration:

aacdu0: <RAID 0/1> on aacu0
aacdu0: 100MB (204800 sectors)
aacdu1: <RAID 5> on aacu0
aacdu1: 714638MB

I am wondering how to install a FreeBSD system on this server.

Very appreciate for any suggestion and pointers.

But they never never replied in their five years period till date. Recently I sent so many emails about key research on terrorism, no one cared at all. VHP or RSS or BJP or Sangh Parivar organization which never forcefully applies or imposed any particular religion related practice on any one across the nation. For example let's take my case. Direct attack through cheating and fraud was done by winners with the feelings and emotions of 100 million citizens of India. Everyone should know now the truth face of fraud political people of Congress. It's the question of life for all of us and our benefits. So, hope you understand and do as much as possible to spread this message and explain it to every person all across the country. You can forward this email to all in your family, friends, organizations, colleagues, all employees, workers, etc. Paste the copy of this complete email article on internet, on forums, on blogs, everywhere possible for you. Just a question: Did you consider DNS-based round-robin?
It's a very simple solution if you just need LB (not HA),
and the traffic doesn't have to go through a single proxy
so there is no bottle-neck problem.

The downside is, of course, that you need multiple external
IP addresses.

If you have only one IP address, a "poor man's round-robin"
solution would be to balance the traffic by port numbers:
The internal web servers are assigned port numbers from 81
to 84. On port 80 there is only a simple script that
returns redirects to ports 81 to 84 in random order.
The downside is that the port number appears in the URL
line of the client browser, which is ugly. (Putting a
proper <BASE> tag in the header of all of your HTML pages
mitigates the problem a little bit, though.)

A "clean" solution will involve some kind of transparent
proxy or gateway that handles the incoming packets and
forwards them to a random web server (but it must be the
same web server for all packets belonging to the same TCP
connection), then have the web server send the reply
directly to the client.

I think you might be able to do this with a bunch of IPFW
"fwd" rules. The LB machine will have "fwd" rules with
the "prob" tag to forward incoming packets to a random web
server. Using the "keep-state" tag will make sure that
packets belonging to the same TCP connection will go to
the same web server. The web servers should send the
reply packets directly to your outgoing router. You have
to be careful with NAT. I haven't tried to do this myself,
but it should be possible to make it work.

All of the above can be done without third-party software.

Patchset can be addapted to 7.2-RELEASE - I've done it but never used.
You can try net/haproxy instead - it should suit your needs. BTW anyone
using haproxy here? Any pros and cons?

It was last updated 3 years ago. 5.4-RELEASE was the
last version supported by the patches, according to
the documentation. It contains kernel patches and
builds a bunch of kernel modules, so I'm not surprised
it doesn't work anymore with a more up-to-date version
of FreeBSD.

I'm just a user, not a developer and I have no use for the URL's.

But I would like to mention that no one makes a distribution intended
for a cluster machine. All the distributions that I know about are
intended for fairly general purpose set of uses; For example, no
machine operating within a cluster of machines should be loaded with
compiler tools; Such tasks, such as compiling source code should
happen prior to loading code on a cluster.

Also, cluster-based machines usually need certain resources that, so
far as I know, are not pre-built into the current distributions. And
though we tried, spending (over the course of a year,) a couple of
months on the problem, we were never able to make cluster-it work on
FreeBSD. Most of the code works just fine, but not the critical
task/job control features.

Cluster machines are intended for production, not development. Lot's
of similar characterizations can be made, but no one, at least so far
as I know, makes a distribution, either for Linux or FreeBSD, that is
appropriate for cluster community service.

I almost wonder if that shouldn't be the default given the requirements of a
non-standard maxdsiz. (I also ran into this trying to build kde4 on a
machine this weekend.)

Given that the goal is to build MPICH2, I would recommend doing

setenv WITHOUT_JAVA

before the build.

Yep and those bad things did happen...(love backups)
Yes that's sad we don't have such GFS but maybe CodaFS will be ready to
production one day.
(I have no idea how about MogileFS is regarding distributed FS under
FreeBSD)

I know and I use ifstated to switch from Cable to ADSL Internet providers.
It's a KISS solution. I didn't even think using it on this scenario... :)

I see. link up for the master; test connection and in case of some network
failure, get that target offline and mount another to slave one.

Carp sound really good to this. I was reading about Lagg operating as a
failover but that don't make sense because I want to see and test both links
but use just one at a given time.

a shared SAN connection. The problem that
I ran into was that this shared area would need to be configured as a shared
file system such as GFS that is not available
for FreeBSD. I did get concurrent connections, but bad things happened.

There is package that is available for FreeBSD (ifstated) that reportedly
will aid you with knowing when a carp status changed, but
I personally never got it to work properly due to time constraints.

My original solution that I still use is a script that looks at the carp
device info from ifconfig and reports MASTER or BACKUP.
This can be executed periodically by a script to have the new master mount
the shared resource and the non-master give it up.
This is far from ideal, but works in instances where immediate fail over is
not required. This is designed to be called from a shell
script via backtick.

STATUS=`./carpstatus.pl`
if [ $STATUS = "MASTER" ] ; then

In another company I have another FreeBSD NAS exporting a NFS volume to
another FreeBSD Samba server, on wich I share some directories to Ms XP
clients. I have no iSCSI on it and it's just fine. Almost 3 years up and
running.

Avoiding iSCSI it's a nice possibility but, on this new scenario the volumes
are exported to both w2k PDC and w2k BDC. My client relies upon a very
granular permission scheme. I don't know if I can handle this without a NTFS
volume. (If I'm not wrong, we can't format a NTFS partition under FreeBSD)

Yes you are totally right. I just want to say I am truly grateful about your
reply because my primary doubt was about the possibility or not to "map"
multiple initiators to one target. And, where is the best place to ask a
thing and get a really valid answer? yep FreeBSD ML :)

Question about iSCSI / NAS / Cluster

I don't know if this ML is the right place to post a question about
NAS/iSCSI and Cluster related issue. I will write it anyway.

info:
I have built a NAS server under FreeBSD. Geom RAID5 over 3 hard disks and
iSCSI target0 created.
It is up and running without problems "exporting" a SCSI driver to a Ms
Windows 2000 Server with Microsoft iSCSI Inititator driver.
The volume is NTFS.

doubt:
I have read multiple "old" posts around the web that I can't connect
multiple initiators (w2k clients) to the same target. Is this true nowadays?

Facts:
I really need at least two w2k clients to the same "storage NAS". Any tip
about how to solve this?
Maybe some kind of failover technique between both w2k servers?
