Avoid giving generously to cybercriminals

In this edition we'll be covering:

• Even as you’re online gaming

• Who’s going to get "done" this season?

Around the Holiday Season, the number and variety of threats tend to
rise sharply. Cybercriminals plan ahead and like to take advantage of
the shopping frenzy aware that most of us don’t have time to shop
in-store. They are quick to utilize the popularity of news and
entertainment events to trick users, infect and compromise their PCs
and make off like The Grinch with everything in your bank accounts.

Even as you’re online gaming

Some of us like to slip away from the family gatherings to play online
games. Due to the large multiplayer user bases of online games and the
subsequent wide distribution of clients and servers, players are
becoming increasingly vulnerable to Internet threats such as trojans,
rootkits, viruses and keyloggers. What’s more, hackers are now
targeting the virtual assets of online gamers, so that they can sell
them in online black-markets for real-world cash.

Who’s going to get “done” this season?

Crooks persist because occasionally their efforts pay off big time.
They’re going to get someone, probably lots of people. Will you be
among their victims? There are two main things you can do to protect
yourself are:

1. Be sceptical, be savvy, be vigilant:If what’s being offered sounds
too good to be true, it just may be. Think twice and check the source
before taking goodies from what may be a dodgy site. Even some
legitimate sites have been compromised by hackers to install spyware
designed to quietly nab your financial details, while you unknowingly
continue to use your PC.

2. Get precision technology and powerful protection: An award-winning

Yeah, this has been discussed in past years on various mailing lists,
now I remember.

IMHO this is too minor to justify inclusion in the Handbook.

Although some smoothing is performed even with the option disabled, enabling
the option does improve the visual quality of the rendered font. IMHO the
difference is quite apparent.

Bigger than that is that kgdb now auto-loads symbols for KLD's on its own and
usually gets it right in the common case.

option you're refering to. IIRC that option just toggles on different method of
doing the rendering.

There's a very outdated article at
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/contributing/ but
even though the specifics are dated, the URLs it contains are good places
to learn.

I'm sure you're already familiar with the Handbook:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ but if not
the introductory material is quite useful. From there the next step is to
take a look at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/
to understand how the doc builds work.

My own experience is that a fresh set of eyes reading through the
documentation is always helpful. The source base changes so quickly that
the doc team can't keep up. So, auditing the 'articles and books' is
always a good idea (based on your own experience installing, configuring,
and running FreeBSD).

You can also take a look at the backlog of PRs on
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?category=docs and
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?category=www and look
at the ones not tagged '[patch]' to see if they are things that you can
work on.

there is now a program installed on the system (see asf(8)) that loads
up the symbols for (k)gdb for loadab;e modules. This page should
reference that utility, and I believe it should reference kgdb rather
than gdb since marcel (cc'd) (I believe) split them apart for kernel
and non kernel work.

Hello Ben,

This seems to be a misunderstanding. The docs under the src/release are
not supposed to be built during "make buildworld" ("make installworld"
does not build anything anyway.) Nor are are they supposed to build just by
typing "make" in one of the directories. (In fact, much of the FreeBSD
src tree does not work that way.)

The files under src/release are part of the FreeBSD Documentation
Project, and require special tools to build; those tools are not part of
the src tree. There are also other docs that get installed under
/usr/share/doc, but those are also not part of the base system.
