> > Peter,
> > have you tried:
> > a) building the native FreeBSD 8.0 jdk1.6 from ports?
> > b) openjdk6?
> > my intuition says that the native jdk1.6 (non diablo) could be the best option for FreeBSD 8.0, at least at this stage.
>
> Thanks for your response.
>
> I've installed 'jdk-1.6.0.3p4_13' from ports but get different problems using it.
> Tomcat, which I'd like to run, doesn't start using native JDK.
> Meanwhile I found freebsd-java list archive, searched a little bit and guess I'm running into
>
> http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=128948
>
> I'll try if my Tomcat can be started using '-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true' and then use native JDK1.6.\

Thats almost a classic situation, no idea tho, why Andrew Reilly (the PR originator) didn't manage to make it work.
Just add -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true, or just recompile jdk16 to disable IPV6 support.
See also here: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=9531

As Greg, said, we better focus on openjdk, try to use tomcat with openjdk. (its available as a package, in case you want to avoid compilations)
I have used openjdk with jboss succesfully, for the last 2 weeks (but so did i for diablo as well).
I hope you manage to solve your issue.

>
> Any chance diablo-jdk nevertheless being fixed and updated?
>
> And what about PR 128948? It's more than one year old and still suffers the same problem ...

Thanks a lot,
> >> What is your thinking about the best option to run java6 on FreeBSD
> >
> > openjdk6. It needs an update to b17 though.
>
> Really? Greg, I'm runnning the port labelled "jkd16", and with that
> as a base, I've been running eclipse with great success, but I know
> I'm going to *have* to upgrade sometime. Could you please tell me
> what's the relationship between the jdk16 port and openjdk? I mean,
> is one of those in a somewhat parental relationship with the other?
> Are they related? Will my experience with jdk16 have a good chance
> of being just as good with openjdk6? I hope I'm not stupid enough to
> ask you to "guarantee" that, but with everything else being equal, are
> my chances good of this?

I believe that a lot of the openjdk6 port was based on the existing jdk16
patches. The benefit you'll get from openjdk6 is that it is based on a
considerably more up to date version of the jdk6 code base. If someone
has the time and the inclination, jdk16 could be updated significantly,
but that seems unlikely at the moment. The down sides for openjdk6 are
that due to licensing restrictions there is now javaws or browser plugin
included. If those are important to you then you are better off sticking
with jdk16.

I'm the maintainer of the mysql-connector-java50 port, which was forked off
from mysql-connector-java some years ago. As this port is now well behind the
current mysql-connector-java at version 5.1.10, and it depends on JDK 1.4 or 1.5,
I wonder how much use it is nowadays.

Unless I hear otherwise, I'm minded to send in a PR to deprecate (and eventually
remove) the port in the next few days. So, if this is something you rely upon,
please speak now or forever hold your peace. If there's still any interest in
have you tried:
a) building the native FreeBSD 8.0 jdk1.6 from ports?
b) openjdk6?
my intuition says that the native jdk1.6 (non diablo) could be the best option for FreeBSD 8.0, at least at this stage.
> I noticed that
> - diablo-jdk1.6.0/amd64 is not precompiled for FreeBSD 8.0, (but for
> future, but the maintainer is not Greg Lewis,
> what is Greg's involvement/relationship with this?

Brian Gardner did the porting work on openjdk6. IIRC he did at least
reference the other ports when doing that.

> - there is no openjdk17 port, it is expected to be available in the future?

Yes. OpenJDK7 is already ported, there just isn't a formal port of it yet.
It's still a pretty fast moving target. I'd also like to see a solution
for the bootstrap problem before it's created.

> - javawrapper does not behave like it used to. Now it is basically
> relying on /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.java.mk

It's used bsd.java.mk (if its available) for a long time. It will fall
back on its own internal logic if its not.

> Anyway, I installed diablo-jdk1.6.0 (for FreeBSD 7.0) from ports,
> and openjdk6 from ports,
> haven't installed any real app to do performance testing.
But if you're feeling adventurous and have FreeBSD/sparc64 8.0 and a yen
of OpenJDK 7.

If you were particuarly keen you could install Mercurial with the forest
extension, hg fclone http://hg.openjdk.java.net/bsd-port/bsd-port/ and
see if you could use it as a bootstrap to port HotSpot so it was faster.

Sorry, I don't think I have the bandwidth to get this going on 7.x right
>> > I've compiled RELENG8 a number of times over the last few beta and RC
>> > versions and recently I noticed that diablo doesn't work and therefore
>> > jdk and anything else depending on jdk cant be built. I'm not using
>> > jave except that I'd like to be able to build textproc/fop again.
>> >
>> > The symptom is:
>> >
>> > # /usr/local/bin/java
>> > Error: could not find libjava.so
>> > Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment.
>> >
>> > Other specifics:
>> >
>> > diablo-jdk-1.6.0.07.02_7
>> >
>> > I'm just using two machines running 8.0 for light use and casual
>> > testing so not a big deal for me, but good to get this fixed before
>> > 8.0 is announced if it is 8.0 related.
>> >
>> > Any hints? btw- I'm not subcribed so please keep my email on the Cc.
>>
>> Do you have port misc/compat7x installed? And COMPAT_FREEBSD7 in your
>> kernel?
>>
>> Ronald.
>
> Ronald,
>
> /var/db/pkg/compat7x-i386-7.2.702000.200906.1/
> # grep COMPAT_FREEBSD7 occnc
> options COMPAT_FREEBSD7 # Compatible with FreeBSD7
>
> That would be "yes" and "yes".
>
> Curtis

Mmm, those fixt a similar problem for me. I don't know what is a next step
for you. Maybe somebody else on this list?

Ronald.
