I'd also like to see the HP tools updated to the current fbsd release.
I think someone from the fbsd fundation should contact HP, officially
with this. If they ever had some tools for freebsd (and they have), it
wouldn't be such a big effort to update them for 8 (or also for 7).

I wonder whether it might be possible to reverse engineer the code --
not sure if that's legal
or not with regards to HP -- who seems to have lost interest.. I doubt
it would take them more
than 1 hour to rebuild the requisite code to the newer versions of
FreeBSD (assuming they
had a machine available)..

I've searched the list from time to time on this topic. Has anyone been
successful in contacting the author of the the hapsm package,
http://people.freebsd.org/~jcagle/? His packages were target towards FreeBSD
5 and FreeBSD 6. With the recent release of the version 8, of the OS, I'm
seriously wondering what the direction is for proliant driver support. I
tried contacting the author a few weeks ago, with no response. From a legal
point of view, what would it take get an actual port from HP? Is it feasible
for a survey form to be setup, to attain interest? I'd be willing to make a
donation to the effort, if this is something that we can make happen.

I'm running 8.0 RC-1 installed via iso without problem - I hope to upgrade it
to 8.0-RELEASE today. Hardware: Proliant DL380 G3. The G5 uses SATA,
correct?

Has anyone installed 8.0 release on the proliant series. I am having an issue that I have never seen before. I have installed 8.0 amd64 release on the machine but using the ports collection trying to install cvsup-without-gui the machine will just reboot during install. Has anyone see this before or how to trouble shoot it?

For what I can read out about it it says: (Its the default behavour)

Recovery to spare disk was successful. (recovering->OK)

The failed disk that was in the raid becomes spare and are now marked
failed.

When you replace the faulty disk, it will become the new spare. It will
not copy the data back to the disk in the possition that failed.

HP DC5850 FreeBSD 7.2 Installation.

Hi,

has anyone had any success installing 7.2 on a dc5850 ?

gettingthe following:

Building the boot loader arguments
Looking up /BOOT/LOADER...Found
Relocating the loader and the BTX
Starting the BTX Loader

BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.02.

The cursor then hangs in the row between "Starting the BTX Loader" and
"BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.02"

Any ideas ?

The BIOS for any SmartArray controller will by default put 2 drives into
a Raid 1 setup if you do not answer the question during the first boot.
This becomes then the first system drive. You can verify that by going
to the console, press F8 when the SmartArray screen comes up. In the BIOS
is a selection for show information.

Also in the SmartArray bios you can set two different size options for
boot purpose. You might want to play with that.

Nope, once you setup your disks in the firmware setup, ciss0 should
attach to the controller just fine. You can see this by modifying the
options in sysinstall and enable the 'emergency holographic shell.' I
think that becomes available via ALT-F4. From there you can view
'dmesg' output to which devices were probed and attached successfully on
bootup.

I also am using 2-sas drives. I did not set them up using the firmware controller (that might be my issue for not being able to write to the disks). I just (physically) installed both of them and didn't set them up. I am trying to install 7-2 Release AMD64. I wasn't sure if I needed to install any of HP's software before I can install FreeBSD?

Which release are you trying to install? 8.0-RC2? Did you get a

Installation Freebsd 7.2 AMD64 on Proliant DL385 G5p

I just purchased one of these for our company as our mail server. I have ran freebsd on boxes (mail server, webserver, proxy server, ftp, etc) but this is the first actual "server" box. Trying to install this on the box with the default geometry makes me receive the "Write failure on transfer (wrote -1 bytes of 1425408 bytes)" error. Alt-f2 is showing
/stand/cpio: premature end of file. I have downloaded the image twice and burned twice yet receive the same error. Is it not able to write because when using the default geometry it cannot format? If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hpasmd and hpasmcli on -current and 8.0

Hi,

I basically had to use the misc/4xcompat port and the Freebsd4 versions
of these files to get these work on 8.0 and -current of FreeBSD. The
hpasmcli version still does not work because I haven't recompiled the
kernel with NO_KSE to prevent it from faulting on the the pthreads call.

Wow. Any chance these will be at least recompiled and republished for
8.0 and -current? Even better, can the source finally be released or
published so we can make a port?

hpasm on DL380/580 G0 ?

difficulty ascertaining the following:

1. Can I run hpasm on generation zero DL380 and DL580 servers?
2. If Q1==Yes, where do I find the code/port/package?

The boxes in question are running 7.2-RELEASE (i386)

As the server goes through the bios, press F8 when it gets to the 6404 display.
You should be able to select the Info option to see the progress.

It should automatic rebuild in any powered on state.

Hmm, not 100% sure, I haven't run Proliants with FreeBSD in a while (unfortunatly).

But my guess is it marked the standby failed? If you enter the BIOS via F8

Thanks Ulf. The machine is stable again after reseating all the
cards for the third time.
Will the 6404 rebuild while the machine is running or is it necessary
to run SmartStart?

dmesg shows:
ciss1: *** Physical drive failure: SCSI port 1 ID 4
ciss1: *** State change, logical drive 1
ciss1: logical drive 1 (da1) changed status recovering->OK, spare status
0x15<configured,failed,available>

Any idea how to translate this?

You can just let it sit in the BIOS of the SmartArray controller it will
rebuild there too. Or you can download the SmartStart CD and boot it.
Run the Raid management tool from there to see progress.

The disks itself carry the information about the raid, so if you have
another server with any SmartArray supporting raid5, you should be
able to plug them in there and let it rebuild. It might warn about
drive position movement and cache memory changes.

I would try and move the entire array to another functioning machine and
let it rebuild there. I wish there were some offline utilities to help
but I'm not aware of any. Good Luck!

Need help recovering from 6404 Raid controller failure

Machine: HP Proliant DL380G4
SCSI Raid Controller: 6404

The situation is that one disk of a raid5 array failed. When the
machine boots, the controller tries to initiate a rebuild onto the spare
disk. The machine boots and within a short time the system resets.
(This is the same problem that I had with this machine a while back,
however, reseating cards does not help)

I need to find out how to run the disk rebuild off line, i.e. what
software is required and what is the procedure. HP only lists ACU
for Linux and windows systems. What do you use with a FreeBSD machine?

Also, if I can get access to another system is it possible to do an
image copy of the good disks so that I can get a backup before proceeding
with the rebuild?

Any help appreciated.

Running hpasm on DL380 G4 on FreeBSD 7.2 amd64

Hello,
I am running FreeBSD 7.2 amd64 on a Proliant DL380 G4. I downloaded
hpasm 7.22 from the website, tweaked the INSTALL file so it could be
installed. I also installed compat6x and 5x. Now, when I try to do
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/hpasm.sh start the deamon does not start. In
/var/log/messages a following message appears:

Oct 2 10:04:55 wolf hpasmd[62376]: ProLiant System Health Daemon
loading (v7.22-FreeBSD)

But ps auxww|grep hpasmd shows nothing.
When I try to run hpasmcli it quits with a segmentation fault. A message
appears in /var/log/messages:

Oct 2 10:05:06 wolf kernel: pid 62385 (hpasmcli), uid 0: exited on
signal 11 (core dumped)

Is there any way that I can run hpasm on the setup above? Or is there
any other way that I can read fan speed and temperature?

I thought ipmi was only for the newer (g5) machines? I've got a g3 -- I
had that package installed
earlier (ipmitools) and loaded the kernel module and no luck.. I assumed
that was because I was not
running on a g5 after doing more research.. Can you confirm this comment?

Ok.. I was able to load up compat6x and compat5x OK on my 7.1 box ..
However, after starting the FreeBSD5 version of hpasmd (which starts
fine), I get
the following when trying to start hpasmcli :

srv1# hpasmcli

Any ideas on why this occurs? I searched the archive but only found one

Did you install the misc/compat6x port?

If I recall correctly, I downloaded hpasm binaries from http://people.freebsd.org/~jcagle/
With compat4x and compat5x installed it runs without any error on 7.2
here.

failure... Anyway, I've got freebsd 7.1 up and running but can't get
the latest hpasm working since the installer wants freebsd 6.x.. I
tried running anyway but ran into shared library issues.... Anyone
got any suggestions? Thank you!

HP Proliant DL385 G6

I would like find out if there are any compatibility/usability or performance
issues running freebsd 7.2 on HP Proliant DL385 G6 with the configuration
below.

The man pages for the drivers suggest the disk controller and NIC are
supported and I see some earlier posts (November 2008) refer to the P410i
controller. I would like to confirm the compatibility with FreeBSD 7.2.

HP Proliant DL385 G6
- 1 * AMD 2.6Ghz Six core CPUs
- 16 G RAM using 2 x 8GB PC2-5300 DIMMs.
- Smart Array P410 with 512M cache with BBWC
- 4 * 1Tbyte 3.5" SATA 7200rpm
- DVD optical drive
- 2 * dual onboard gigabit NIC HP NC382i (Broadcom NetXtreme II controller)
- A couple of PCI slots.

ML110 G4 (part nr: 470064-195)... all 7.X RELEASE.

No solution found yet...
