cranked up Vira a few weeks ago with brand new battery. Twas a VERY cold day in Baltimore. Started right up but soon there was gas sprinkling out from below the air filter. Today removed air filter assembly to find a black tube sticking straight out where the gas is leaking from. Does anyone know what's up with this???? Thank you!

Trace the tube back and find out where it goes. Then I can try and help.

black tube protruding out from side. After 90 degree elbow, inserts into left carb assembly. You can see it behind two diagonal hoses descending from upper right of left-hand pic.
appears to attach between carb and gas tank (not certain)- see right pic.
THANK YOU for offer of help!

If I am looking at the right hose, That appears to be a vacuum line since it comes off the carb holder. It shouldn't be sticking straight out! It should be attached to something, perhaps part of the emmission system. If you don't have a Clymers Service Manual for the bike, I suggest you get one. Also, go to www.viragotech.com and ask your question. There might be someone there with a later model bike that knows for sure what the line is. At any rate, there should not be fuel coming out of it.

Clymer book shows the hose clearly as numbers 46, 47, 48, 49.
It does  not show very clearly the connections of this hose, although- judging from where I see this hose connnecting to the carb on my Virago, the connection is to the protruding 'nipple' just to the left of the number 38 in this diagram.
The Clymer book is not very helpful beyond this. Still not sure what this tube is supposed to do, although my guess is that it is part of the Coasting Enrichener System or the  Air Induction System Vacuum Line.

Is this tube supposed to be attached to something inside the air filter assy?
Fuel comes out of this tube as soon as I crank it.

I see this post is from 5 months ago but figured I'd reply anyway.  I have a 97 Virago 750.  Last night mine started doing the same thing you are describing.  As far as I can tell, the tube that goes into the right side intake cover does NOT connect to anything.  The left side however, is entirely different.  If you look inside the end of the tube, you'll see a filter like device in there.  I believe this is some sort of breather or overflow line.  I'm not positive yet but I think the reason these bike do this is because the petcock is set to "Pri" (Prime) instead of "On" or "Res".  In the prime setting the gas freely flows from the tank to the point that it over fills the carbs.  In the On or Reserve positions, fuel only flows when vacuum is present ie: the engine is running.  Quirky design, never seen this before.  If I'm wrong and you've actually figured out the problem, please post your findings.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi, I just got a 96 virago 1100 from my father inlaw. I have the same problem that you described. Fuel coming out of vaccum line. Did you ever get it resolved? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tommy

Tommy,
This tube isn't a vacuum line, it is a vent tube designed to take the fuel fumes out of the carb. If you are getting fuel coming out of the tube, it is being sucked out of the carb by the vacuum in the air box which the hose should be connected to through a filter. Check your float levels, they are probably set too high.

Bill, thanks for the info. I just got the bike from my father inlaw and it was garaged for 4-5 years. Could the floats be stuck? Do I need to remove the carbs and clean them out?

Thanks for the help.

Tommy

If the bike has set that long with fuel in it, you will need to remove the carbs, clean and rebuild them. Take the carbs apart and work on them seperately as there are parts that are different in each carb. K&L has good kits for the Mikuni's. Some good info is available at the following sites...... www.drpiston.com and www.ccworks.org . Both sites go into some detail about the carbs. You will also need to get all the old fuel out of the main and aux fuel tanks, also check them for rust. If they are rusty there are ways of dealing with it. You will need to change your fuel filter and make sure your fuel pump is working properly. I would suggest changing all the fuel lines and all the vacuum lines because some of them will be cracked and you can fix it now or fight it later.
Parts are available at a number of sites which can be found by doing a google search. www.bikebandit.com is a good source for aftermarket and OEM parts. A dealer that will work with you on parts is www.stadiumyamaha.com .
