New GCC Runtime Library Exception

The GCC Steering Committee, along with the Free Software Foundation
and the Software Freedom Law Center, is pleased to announce the release
of a new GCC Runtime Library Exception.

This license exception has been developed to allow various GCC
libraries to upgrade to GPLv3. It will also enable the development
of a plugin framework for GCC.

There is one important caveat. It was discovered after the final release
has been made that some OS kernels on i?86 and x86_64 architectures
violate the processor specific ABI with regards to the DF flag, if a process
is interrupted with a signal while doing overlapping memmove or running some
other code with DF flag set, the signal handler might be started with DF
flag set on entry to the signal handler. GCC 4.3.0 no longer emits cld
instructions unnecessarily, so GCC 4.3.0 compiled async signal handlers or
functions the signal handlers call that rely on DF flag being cleared
might misbehave. This will be hopefully fixed in the kernels soon and
future GCC releases might provide an optional workaround for this bug.

on January 31, 2007.

This release is a minor release, containing bug fixes for

There are two important caveats beyond those listed on the web page
above:

1. GNU TAR 1.14 is required to unpack the source releases. Other
versions of tar are likely to report errors or silently unpack the
file incorrectly.

2. It was discovered after the final release had been made that there
is an installation problem when building with Java enabled and when
"--enable-version-specific-runtime-libs" is in use . In
particular, header files for some of the Java APIs will be placed
in "/include" (with no prefix), due to a defect in the Java
Makefiles.

There are three known work-arounds:

a) Disable Java by using "--enable-languages" when configuring
GCC. For example, to build just the C and C++ compilers, use
"--enable-languages=c,c++".

b) Do not use "--enable-version-specific-runtime-libs".

c) Use "--with-gxx-include-dir=" to explicitly indicate where
you would like the Java header files to be placed. For
example, if you use "--prefix=/path/to/prefix" then using:

--with-gxx-include-dir=/path/to/prefix/lib/gcc/<target>/4.1.0

will place the header files in the appropriate version-specific
location.

I expect this problem will be corrected in GCC 4.1.1.

We expect to release GCC 4.0.3 (an bug-fix release relative to GCC

GCC now uses Subversion, instead of CVS

If you build snapshots directly from the FSF source repositories, you
should be aware that GCC is now using the Subversion source control
system, instead of CVS.

We made this change because we believe Subversion will make it easier
for us to continue to improve GCC.

For information about using Subversion to access the GCC source code
repository, please see:

Tthis change does not affect the format for source releases and
snapshots; they will still be provided as compressed TAR files in the
usual way, and will be, for the most part, indistinguishable from the
versions generated from CVS.

Daniel Berlin deserves the credit for leading this conversion, with
assistance from a large team of volunteers.

We'd also like to thank the developers of Subversion with providing us
with such a powerful tool, and the developers of CVS for providing us
with a tool that served us so well for such a long time.

REMINDER: CVS Server going readonly tomorrow

At 12:00PM EST tomorrow, GCC CVS, excluding wwwdocs, will become
readonly.

I will announce when the new SVN repository is ready.

I will make the final commit to the cvs repository noting it has moved.
in the toplevel dir of *both* /cvs/gcc and /cvs/gcc/gcc

In the meanwhile, 1.3.0rc1 of SVN will become available at sometime in
the next hour or so at:

http://lolut.utbm.info/pub/subversion-1.3.0-rc1/

Please remember that if you break the bootstrap before it goes readonly,
people will be annoyed with you :)

I also will remove the old test repository at /svn/gcc when i start the
conversion, so do not be surprised when it disappears.

No, that's very weird; that was PR 23993, which I fixed. Or, thought I
did. It's definitely fixed for me on x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu. But,
the nature of the bug didn't seem at all system-dependent. I've checked
that I have no local patches in my GCC 4.0.x tree. So, I'm pretty
mystified...

Well, I am using an embedded mpc8540 (ppc, e500, SPE extension) system
and can work like on a native system. Currently, the system is not very
busy, so I can run some tests if it's useful for you...
Can you tell me (point to some documentation) how to run through all the
testsuites?
