getting files to show in a project without a "src" directory

Does anybody have advice on getting the package explorer to show files in a project that does not include an "src" directory?   I am at version 1.4.4.2636.  When I create the project I uncheck "Create default 'src' folder..." but the package explorer still tries to show a "src" directory.  Then I go to Project Properties and verify that my root directory is a source directory, yet no source is shown when I expand the directory.  Is there anything else that I should be doing to allow PyDev to help me explore source within my directories?
